The composite industry is increasingly demanding a precise and
robust characterization of the critical and invisible in-mould cure
behaviour of resins. The available sensors are struggling to meet
the demand for robust, highly-automated series production of
composites. The new sensor
developed by Netzch based
on the dielectric measurement
principle has a unique ceramic
construction and meets the
requirements of the industry
combined with attractive cost
and low installation space. The sensor itself is scratch resistant, temperature resistant from -150°C up to 220°C and pressure resistant up to 300
bar. Sensors for the temperature range up to 300°C are already in production and will be available soon.

Visitors at JEC World 2018 will have
an opportunity to see Mikrosam's new
hybrid AFP & FW solution for structural composite parts production.
The hybrid work cell integrates the advantages of both
filament winding (FW) and
automated fibre placement
(AFP) technologies to provide
new and exciting opportunities for increased freedom in
designing parts and reaching new levels of productivity and profitability.
Applications can be found in the aerospace, automotive, oil & gas storage and transport, marine and other industries with a high demand for
composite parts.
The solution is optimized to produce large composite parts with an excellent strength-to-weight ratio (up to 100 tons weight), a diameter of
up to 3.5 metres, and lengths of 10 metres. The configuration of the new
AFP & FW work cell offers customers flexibility through dual process
equipment: an interchangeable multi-tow (16) AFP head, and a FW
system to access the best of both process variants. The advanced AFP
head, equipped with an infrared heating device, is designed for automated bi-directional lay-up of thermoset prepreg tapes. The filament winder performs wet and dry winding of carbon, glass or aramid fibres. The
time-consuming process of transferring the product from one machine
(FW process) to another (AFP process) is done within minutes. For validation and optimization of the multi-material process, Mikrosam developed the integrated Mikroplace™ & Winding Expert™ software module
for programming and simulation.

This technology reveals the behaviour of materials in reactive FRP processes, processes with high in-mould pressures and composite processes
using electrically-conductive carbon fibres. While having a look inside
the mould, the sensor can provide information about the resin viscosity,
gel points and degree of cure. During the runtime of the OPTO-Light
project rewarded by AVK, it was proven that this new sensor allows for
intelligent self-adapting process management based on the curing behaviour in order to compensate deviations in semi-finished products
and reduce cycle times and scrap. Through communication with the
process control system, the sensor technology controls the process in
such a way that an optimal adhesion of dissimilar materials in a cascaded
process can be achieved.

Manufacturing and automation for large structures

MTorres will be presenting the latest R&D developments regarding manufacturing and automation of large structures, with an Hall 5 - N42
special focus on fuselages, and the new low-cost carbon fiber material based on MTorres' proprietary new tow preparation process.
This "new mold-less monocoque manufacturing process" is finalist in the JEC Innovation awards 2018, in the category "Aerospace-Process"
and the winner will be announced during the show.
Additionally, the Russian company, JSC Aerocomposite is finalist in the category "Aerospace-Application" for the Infusion Technology for
Aircraft Wing. These wings are the first in the world to be built using dry carbon fiber, and they are manufactured using extensively MTorres equipment. TORRESFRIBERDRY, AFP machine and TORRESMILL Routing and Milling machine are used for components fabrication. The Outer
Wing Box, Central Wing Box Assembly Lines and the Assembly solution for the integration of the Outer Wing Box with Central Wing Box are also
MTorres supplied.
