The Institute of Lightweight Engineering and
Polymer Technology presents the next generation of thermoplastic composite profiles, which uses the outstanding material properties and technological advantages of thermoplastic fibre composites to meet the specific requirements of a wide range of applications
and customers. This approach results in improved product properties:
up to 40% higher damage tolerance, 110% higher fatigue strength or 3D
formability compared to epoxy-based composites.

The international specialty chemicals producer Kautschuk-Group is expanding its
range and ramping up the production of hardeners and latent accelerators for epoxy systems designed for the composites market.

With tight quality controls and the
ability to provide specialty chemicals, the group members Isochem
USA, Europe, and China are poised
to expand its reach to more composite manufacturers on a worldwide
scale as they develop new products
for demanding applications, such
as mid- and large-scale prepreg production in automotive, aerospace,
and wind energy.
Kautschuk Group's portfolio in
specialty adhesives, adhesion promoters, and coupling agents has
long been the basis for a variety of
bonding and composite manufacturing processes in the automotive and tyre
industries.
With the 2018 production line-up in place, the Group is set up to become

Cardolite introduces FormuLITE 2405B, the latest development in Cashew Nutshell Liquid (CNSL) technology for composite applications. FormuLITE 2405B is a formulated amine
hardener designed to provide faster curing at room temperature
and quicker mould release in RTM, lamination and hand lay-up processes. In combination with the FormuLITE 2501A epoxy resin, it
offers excellent fibre wetting and adhesion and superior resistance to
water and aggressive fluids in comparison to other bio-based epoxy
systems. Optional short post-curing at mild temperatures is enough to
maximize its thermal and mechanical properties.
In an expanding composites market constantly looking for innovations, bio-based epoxy systems are moving from a niche to industrial
production, giving composite designers and manufacturers the right
tools to increase the sustainability of their products without compromising on quality and durability. With a bio-based content up to 45%,
Cardolite's FormuLITE systems are at the forefront to provide such
sustainability to the market.

The starting material is a pre-impregnated roving (tape) processed in
a tape braiding process to near-net shape tape preforms. The braiding
wheel automatically places the tapes and aligns them so that loads can
be optimally absorbed. The consolidation of preforms into profiles takes
place in a specially developed moulding process. With its short cycle
time, the process is suitable for small pilot series as well as series larger
than 1000 pieces.

AIREX® T10 breakthrough innovation comes from the intelligent combination
between PET, one of the most cost-effective polymers, and a direct extrusion
process technology (AIREX® GEN2), the leanest possible foam production process. Furthermore, the new AIREX® GEN2 technology even enhances AIREX®
T10 properties. The main advantages of the new, directly extruded AIREX® T10
are: greater mechanical properties; outstanding fatigue resistance; homogeneous cell structure; absence of weld lines; perfect surface quality; high temperature and chemical resistance.

With this approach, improved product properties and increased production efficiency can be achieved over established thermoset composite
solutions. This "thermoplastic advantage" can be used across industries
to meet a wide range of customer needs.
This technology is currently being transferred to the spin-off company
Herone, which intends to develop, produce and distribute thermoplastic
fibre composite profiles with tailored performance.

3A Composites officially introduced the new low-density AIREX® T10.60
recently. T10.60 is a very lightweight version of its successful and innovative
AIREX® T10 family. While the higher density AIREX® T10.100 and 110 are designed for wind blades, the new T10.60 is designed - among other applications
- for wind turbine nacelles. The main characteristics of AIREX® T10.60 are its
high mechanical properties, also in fatigue, its cost efficiency, its homogeneous
cell structure, and the fact that it is recycled and recyclable.
