- SUBCON Thailand Exhi-bition: The
SUBCON Thailand Exhibition is
ASEAN and Thailand's largest exhibition that brings together part manufacturers and suppliers to help support
industry in the ASEAN area. It highlights the potential of Thai suppliers
to global industrial buyers. This show
receives an overwhelming response
from foreign buyers. It is held every
year in the middle of May at BITEC
Bangkok.
JCM: Why are you interested
in composites?

S. P.: As the Thai economy continues
to grow, new business opportunities
are emerging. Under the new policy,
BOI will focus on advanced core technologies (e.g. biotechnology, nanotechnology, advanced material technology and high technology industry).
Composites are increasingly used in
many advanced and high technology
sectors. Because of their low weight
and strength, their applications are
growing and they can be used in various sectors such as the automotive,
aerospace or sport industries.
The composite industry in Thailand
is growing, in contrast with the global trend. This is why BUILD, as an
industrial networking body, supports
the growth of this industry in Thailand by encouraging investors. This
growth will bring great benefits to
Thai companies and to the country,
while boosting Thailand's position as
an attractive investment destination.
JCM: Did you develop a specific offer for
composite companies?

S. P.: The composite industry uses a

wide range of technologies, including
low technology and high technology.
So if you are a composites business in
target industries the government wants
to promote, you will be classified as a
priority activity with higher incentives.

JCM: Can you tell us more about the
composite companies already involved
in your programme?

The company made a 332 million baht
total investment, thus creating 2430
jobs for Thai people. The factory is located in the Amata Nakorn Chonburi
industrial park. It can expand its market
to European countries and is leading
the composite industry in Thailand.
Another composite company promoted
by BOI is Cho Thavee plc, a regional
company in the Khon Kaen province
that produces truck trailers. The company plays a key role in helping decentralize and develop the regional industry
in Northeastern Thailand. It is currently
expanding its composite business into

goals in the composite field?

S. P.: Our goal in the composite field is
the same as in other sectors: to promote
an industry knowledge base using key
indicators to organise activities that encourage R&D, innovation and technology development in the industry.
Moreover, strengthening the composite
value chain is a priority. As mentioned
earlier, the global composite industry
is growing, so if Thailand can have a
competitive composite cluster, this will
benefit companies and the country as a
whole.
In addition to promoting the composite
industry in the global market, promoting composites in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) is one of our
targets. Because the ASEAN economy
is one of the fastest growing in the world, we need to prepare local composite
companies for entry into the AEC.
