Not a month goes by without a new
announcement: the longest blade,
the largest wind farm, an offshore
achievement, the introduction of new
materials, or new growth records for the
market or for installed capacity.
It is a fact that the wind energy sector just
keeps on growing, even if an occasional
local slowdown can be observed here
and there. The onward progress of this
sector appears inexorable, and when it
isn't land-based, it is offshore. In offshore,
there is endless potential, given the huge
areas that can be exploited - even more
so now that floating wind turbines are
being developed and that the technical
solutions proposed today are very
convincing. These new solutions not only
open up possibilities for exploiting new
areas, they also make it possible to move
the wind farms away from the coasts and
encourage local populations to accept
the installation of new wind turbines. In
2015, Europe invested a record 13 million
euros in offshore, for a total 3 GW of new
capacity. Global figures are also positive,
and installed capacity increased by 17.2%
in 2015, from 371,374 to 434,856 MW.
In some places, reluctance on the part
of the populations can considerably
slow down development, and so can
competition from other energy sources,
which inevitably involves pointing out
the financial burden of wind energy or
the risks for employment. These facts
may be problematic over the short

term, but certainly cannot cast doubt
upon wind turbines as an energy source.
In Europe for example, with 13 GW
installed in 2015, wind represented 44%
of new installed energy capacity, all types
of energy lumped together. Non-fossil
energy sources are highly popular with
politicians and the public. Composites
are in a good position, and have a clear
role to play in fields like solar energy,
small hydroelectric power plants, or
marine current turbines.

The wind sector is also a fantastic field for
experimentation that generates quite a
few innovations, and often. We've talked
briefly about floating wind turbines, but
we also need to mention self-produced
energy solutions like vertical, bladeless,
and even vortex bladeless turbines.
We can't reasonably leave out materials
either, especially composite ones!
Our special report will give you the
opportunity to learn more about the
first polyurethane wind rotor blade,
the introduction of thermoplastics, and
the new design tools that accelerate the
design process for composite blades.
