veloped and patented by Solvay (Figure
2). In 2015, ABT became the first biobased chemical operator in Asia to obtain certification from the Roundtable
on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB).
RSB is an independent and global multi-stakeholder coalition promoting biomaterials sustainability. Its certification
has been recognised as the strongest
and most trusted by a number of influential NGOs and UN agencies.
Success in resins
and composites
In 2015, Epicerol®-based epoxy resins were used in the composite matrix
of a Belgian solar car (Figure 3). The
Punch One car combined the latest
bio-based chemistry, solar panel innovation and electronic battery technology. The car competed and finished the
Solar Challenge across Australia during
October 2015, clearly putting Epicerol®
through its paces.
Led by university students and experts,
the Punch Powertrain Solar Team used
an autoclave cure process to produce
the car's bio-based composites. These
were produced using carbon fibre
prepregs impregnated with BisA epoxy
and cured with a hardener based on
cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL), a natural renewable chemical raw material.
The final resin matrix was calculated to
contain 45% biomaterial.

In addition to a strong, impact-resistant, lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced
epoxy car body, the excellent wetting
properties of CNSL-based hardeners
and the improved interlaminar shear
strength of the final composite resulted
in an overall bio-based content of 18%.
In light of these successes and its continued
commercial
development,
Epicerol® received the Innovation
Award in the Raw Materials category
at JEC Asia 2015. The chemical was
awarded and recognised as: Bio-based
ECH for more sustainable epoxy resins.
Lightweighting with ECH
Across the automotive, aerospace and
wind energy industries, lightweighting
is considered essential as regulations on
fuel and energy efficiency push manufacturers to make vehicles and parts
ever lighter. In this climate, Epicerol®
enables producers to improve both the
efficiency and environmental performance of composite materials.
A growing trend in wind energy is the
use of carbon fibres. While glass fibres
are popular in small to medium rotor
blades, the material is not as well suited
to long, lightweight blades. Epoxy resins and hardeners, combined with carbon fibres, provide the flexibility and
stability needed, maximising the economic and environmental efficiency of
wind power.

In aerospace, advanced composites can
represent over half the structure of the
latest commercial aircraft. Epicerol®based composites, such as technical
textiles coated with epoxy resins, can
allow the aerospace industry to partly
offset its emissions with the efficiency
and environmental footprint of its materials.
There are also huge opportunities for
the leisure industry. Sports and recreational equipment such as skis, surfboards and bicycles can benefit from
lightweight bio-based composites. The
percentage of consumers willing to pay
a price premium to support the development of credible, more sustainable
products in this sector is also growing.
Plant-based and
sustainable: a growing trend
Epoxy resins are driving composites
deeper into markets where anti-corrosion properties are required, such
as aircraft and offshore wind farms.
Manufacturers can now produce biobased composite materials based on
credible, sustainable ECH that can address these customer needs and performance requirements.
The use of bio-based resins is seeing a continuous upward trend due to
increasing environmental concerns.
