Note, however, that although it does
favour wind energy, China's next fiveyear plan is somewhat less "generous" in
that area. Chinese companies could be
tempted to seek out foreign markets to
make their production units profitable,
which could have the effect of further
accelerating consolidation in this highly
competitive market, where capital expenditure is considerable. The NordexAcciona merger and GE's acquisition of
Alstom have already been followed by
Siemens' June buyout of Gamesa to form
a mammoth 21,000-employee company.
The big fish might still have enough ap-
petite to preserve their margins.
After a number of difficult years, the
American market is looking rosier,
thanks to new political guidelines and
the application of the Wind Energy
Production Tax Credit (PTC), a $0.023
tax credit per kWh generated for the
U.S. electric grid - enough to attract
investors despite the low price of fossil
energy.
Turkey wants to develop its wind turbine capacity significantly, with a target
of 23GW installed by 2023. The latest
example so far of this development is
the start of construction on LM Wind
The race is on
for gigantic proportions
The record for size held by the Vestas
V164-8MW was broken this year by
the Adwen AD8-180. Adwen, a 50/50
joint venture between Areva and
Gamesa, equipped its wind turbine
with 88.4-metre-long blades that were
designed specially by LM Wind Power.
WWEA's predictions of wind turbines of
more than 250 metres in rotor diameter
by 2020 could turn out to be accurate if
this trend continues. The A380 jetliner
appears smaller and smaller compared
to these giants (Fig.3)!
Conclusion
The trend is positive in terms of orders
in the wind energy market, and 2016
will likely be only slightly less rosy. But
even if the situation is sound over the
medium term in this highly competitive market, the competition remains
extremely fierce, investments are heavy,
and the risk of political turnarounds is
always present. The pressure on prices
and machine efficiency is intense.

Power's new wind-turbine blade manufacturing plant in Bergama (western
Turkey). This will be the group's 14th
plant, where production is scheduled to
start up in mid-2017. The plant will employ 450 people.
