Environmentally-friendly
wind turbine turns traffic into energy
Capture Mobility is offering a new wind turbine made from recycled
carbon fibre, which turns the wind created by traffic on busy main roads
into reusable energy.

of electricity, but it is made of recyclable
carbon fibre, rendering it "greener" than

traditional wind turbines. Carbon fibre's
exceptional properties have turned it
into a must-have for many industries
focusing on light-weighting, but its
manufacturing costs and difficulty to replace or repair have slowed down its use.
However, the use of recycled carbon fibre has been increasing recently, and
this turbine is yet another example of it.
The turbine is about two-and-a-half metres tall and weighs nine kilograms. The
point was to make it easy to transport
and install. The fully-charged battery
can hold a kilowatt of electricity, which
is enough to run two lamps and a fan for
around 40 hours.
Future opportunities
Sanwal Muneer's idea became popular enough that he received funding
from Shell and won an award from the
United Nations for it. In turn, he created
Capture Mobility, first based in Pakistan
and then moved to Scotland in 2015.
The location was a strategic choice as
the company operates under the global
entrepreneur programme of the government body, UK Trade and Investment
(ITKI). One of the Scottish government's aims is to invest and develop
cleaner technologies and the wind turbine fits that criteria perfectly. What's
more, Scotland's wind quotas are more
than enough to be suitable for the use of
wind turbines.
To further its business and research,
Capture Mobility has now partnered
with academics from the University of
Edinburgh to work on the design of the
turbine.

to be is an original one: its creator, Sanwal Muneer, was standing on the side of a Malaysian racetrack
back in 2012 when he thought of it. "At
first, the breeze from the cars was just a
welcome relief from the humidity. Then I
started to think about how we could use
that energy." Sanwal Muneer, a young
entrepreneur from Pakistan, then
worked on materializing a small wind
turbine that spins as cars and trucks
drive by at high speed.
