The world's fastest sailing yacht
Last April, following 30,000 hours of work that lasted more than a
year and mobilized 50 people, François Bich's Vitalia II catamaran -
formerly called the Orange 2 - was launched at the Multiplast shipyard in Vannes, Brittany (western France).

n February 2014, François Bich,
head of the BIC group and a sailing
enthusiast, acquired Orange 2, an
exceptional, record breaker racing
catamaran built in 2003 by Multiplast.
A veritable "rebirth"
It seemed natural for Mr. Bich to
put Multiplast in Vannes in charge
of transforming the multihull into a
cruising catamaran, the goal being to
preserve the boat's racing DNA, so
to speak. Jack Michal, Franck Martin
and Yann Penfornis, three of the
Gilles Ollier Design Team's architects
who helped design Orange 2, worked
together to meet these new technical
specifications.
An exceptional boat
It is not an easy task to transform a
multihull that was built to break records - and which did outperform the
others during its time - into a cruising
catamaran. The original boat concept
must be preserved, but a certain number of changes must be made that are
indispensable for the boat's new programme. So, weighing the boat down

any doubts about the original composite
structure's capacity to support this type of
modification when you were contacted for
the project?
Yann Penfornis : Not really, because

with an overly large nacelle between
the two hulls was out of the question
when we proposed the transformation
project to Mr. Bich, we knew that the boat
had been designed for stiffness and not
for strength, and so we also knew that we
were starting out with comfortable safety
coefficients for the hulls and arms. When

we designed Orange 2, we wanted a much
less deformable boat than those of the
previous generation (Club Med, Innovation Explorer, Team Adventure), and so we
started out with a sound platform.
JCM: What were your first concerns with
respect to the materials used? The boat was
really put through the mill for more than a
decade. Did you observe signs of ageing,
weakness or the like?
Y.P. : We started by inspecting the entire

A year later, the Multiplast team
proceeded to launch the catamaran
on which, let's remember, Bruno
Peyron and his team had established
transatlantic, transmediterranean and
24-hour-distance records and won
the Jules Verne Trophy (and, since
breaking the World Eastabout record,
Orange 2 has only been beaten twice).
Now, the boat is getting a new lease
on life.
