Apodius Vision System for 3D Composite Inspection
The new Apodius Vision System 3D
(AVS 3D) is an inspection system for
composite structures in general and for
textile fabrics in particular. It provides
measurement results starting from
the fibre and ending with the finished
composite product. The AVS 3D measures fibre orientation and geometry
in handcraft and industrial automation
systems.
High component costs have so far
prevented the breakthrough of fibre
composite materials in series production.
In addition to the fibres themselves,
the manufacturing processes that are
currently used are responsible for most
of the component costs. The basic requirement for significant cost reductions is
to further automate processes derived
from the common manual production
of small-series composite products.

Apodius pursues the goal to provide the
necessary measurement technology for
automated fibre composite production
and thus replace the current manual operations by capable processes. In addition
to the reduction in cycle times, the scrap
and rework rates are minimized. Upon
reaching stable processes, a consistent
lightweight technology becomes possible
and the previously required over-dimensioning of components can be reduced.

The AVS 3D expresses composite production in numbers. Combined with a
global reference system (e.g. a robot), it
provides a complete three-dimensional
digitization of geometry, surface texture
and fibre orientation. Actual/theoretical
comparisons for design, simulation and
machine setup enable the production of
perfect composite parts at reduced costs.

Application of composite syntactic polymers
to strengthen existing steel structures
This innovation consists in a world-first
application of a composite syntactic
polymer to strengthen an existing steel
structure. It has been set up in Western
Australia, delivering important cost reductions of up to AUD $5M to the client.

This innovative effort resulted in the
development of the Advantic Structural Composite Jacket (ASC Jacket). In
conventional structural engineering practice, long and slender steel or concrete
columns, often with circular cross
sections, are employed to carry primary
vertical loads. The controlling design capacity of a column is typically buckling,
which is due to the geometry of the cross
section and length of the member, and
not due to stress in excess of the material
yield limits.

in partnership with Newmont Mining

Corporation (Newmont) and Kalgoorlie
Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) in
Western Australia, has developed a composite repair and structural strengthening solution that allows rapid, efficient,
and structurally quantifiable capacity
improvement to damaged and reduced
sections due to the corrosion of primary
structural members in civil infrastructure
applications. The ASC Jacket directly
addresses buckling issues. It is comprised
of a thin exterior stainless steel skin and
an interior structural cast polymer core
machined to the engineered thickness
requirement and surface profile of the
structural member to which it will be
bonded. Jacket pairs are joined in the
field via mechanical bolted connections
along the length and at the ends to form
a continuous structural strengthening
system permanently and structurally
bonded to the existing load carrying
