JEC COMPOSITES MAGAZINE - Issue #74 - July 2012 - 5

JCM: According to you, what is the most promising market for the next 5 to 10 years?

J.B. : New regulations in the au-

tomotive industry require OEMs to improve the fuel efficiency of their fleet and reduce their carbon dioxide emissions. Replacing steel with carbon-fibre-reinforced epoxy composites for structural parts or even the whole chassis can lead to up to 40% weight reduction. This is the technology that has the biggest impact on fuel efficiency. The automotive market could therefore potentially become a very significant market for epoxy composites over the next decade. Today, these materials are only used in specific high-end niches, but there is tremendous effort on-going to take these materials into the large volume car segment. Momentive recently introduced a number of systems that enable the mass production of composites in structural applications and exterior panels. These systems offer an exceptional balance in cure, flow, processability and mechanical or surface properties. While composites are fairly new materials to many automotive engineers, the current intense development collaboration can change this quickly. So it is probably not a question if this market will grow, but rather when and what market penetration can be achieved.

JCM: How do you adapt your R&D to each different market?

J.B. : Since wind energy is already

a well-established market, our R&D activities essentially focus on reducing total costs. We look for improved raw materials, faster blade manufacturing processes and innovative light-weight blade designs to address the need for lower life cycle costs and increased power output for current and

future wind parks. For the composite pipe market, we work on replacing MDA to meet the REACH limitations on the use of aromatic amines in open environments; we also work on continuous winding processes. In the construction market, Momentive is active in the field of composites for large structures where flame retardant systems are needed and pipe-in-pipe systems for drinking water networks. Our company is also actively developing new water-dispersable epoxy resins to improve fibre sizing technologies for both thermoset and thermoplastic matrices, e.g. waterborne sizings based on multifunctional epoxies with an inherently high temperature resistance which are required to enter in some new semi-structural applications. In the automotive market, a more holistic approach is needed to successfully take composite materials to mass production. Our chemists continue to optimize epoxy systems to meet the composite material requirements of OEMs. At the same time, we are involved in advanced application development activities with vehicle and part producers and equipment

companies, in order to develop processes that are sufficiently fast and economical to enable mass production. We are also expanding our in-house capabilities for part design, prototyping and small series production. All of these are necessary to accelerate market acceptance.
JCM: What will be the main activities of the TRAC? And how do you manage to be close to final users?

testing. This will support the development of new chemistries and products, while enabling Momentive to screen and develop new application process concepts. Obviously, the facility also makes it much easier to collaborate with customers and industry partners on these topics. We will initially focus on various RTM and SMC processes.
JCM: Do you plan other investments in composites in the near future?

J.B. : The Transportation

Research and Application Centre (TRAC) we have opened in Duisburg (Germany) is an important link in the overall composite competency chain. It builds on R&D centres where new chemistry and products are developed and mirrors the advanced application lab we have operated for many years in Esslingen (Germany) for wind applications. The TRAC is also linked to our UK-based Combined Composite Technologies, Ltd. Company, which brings design, tooling and prototyping know-how. The activities of TRAC will focus on thorough application development and composite No74 July 2012 /

J.B. : Momentive Specialty

Chemicals not only has a legacy of more than 50 years in epoxy composites, but we also are global market leaders in engineered wood composites with our Forestry Products Division. The company is clearly committed to the composite market, where we have seen significant growth through innovation, and have many exciting opportunities ahead. We’ll make the necessary investments to grow capacity where needed and to strengthen capabilities since, in the end, innovation drives sustainable growth. n
