Lighter than water

The Bayflex® RIM Lightweight polyurethane system can reduce the weight of automotive components by up to 30%. With a density of just 0.9 kilograms per litre, this material is even lighter than water.

Energy-efficient materials

T

he demand for lightweight construction systems in the automotive industry is now at an all-time high, the aim being to cut fuel consumption, costs and CO2 emissions. According to VCD Verkehrsclub Deutschland, reducing the weight of a vehicle by 100 kilograms lowers fuel consumption by 0.5 litres over a distance of 100 kilometres and cuts carbon dioxide emissions by 1.2 kilograms over the same distance. Lightweight structures are now more important than ever given the trend toward future-oriented driving technologies such as electric mobility.

Bayer MaterialScience has already developed a wide range of energyefficient polyurethane materials for the automotive sector. In April, the company went one step further with the presentation of the Bayflex® RIM lightweight polyurethane system that can be used to further cut the weight of finished parts by up to 30%. This solution owes its lightweight design to the high-grade Bayflex® polyurethane system used in tandem with a clever combination of fillers that replace the usual mineral fibres. The material’s excellent mechanical properties remain intact. This system considerably reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions and, with certain vehicle models, also improves driving dynamics. In electric cars, this better compensates for the still considerable weight of the battery and helps extend the vehicle’s range.

Bayflex® polyurethane-reinforced, reactioninjection-moulding (RRIM) systems are highperformance polymer systems with excellent heat stability, low moisture absorption, low thermal expansion characteristics and excellent impact resistance. Parts made from this material have excellent surface and paint adhesion qualities, and a DOI (Distinction of Image) comparable to painted steel parts. Bayflex RRIM systems are enhanced with glass fibre or mineral fillers to produce automotive exterior parts and panels such as fascia, rocker panels, trim and body panels, as well as a variety of non-automotive applications.
