The cross-sectional representation allows the operator to clearly identify the structure. Figure 5 shows a 7 metre long section of a leading edge bond line scanned with the conformable array (spanwise Bscan), which clearly indicates a thickness variation in the glue layer and a lack of adhesion. Signal processing tools for reliable evaluations Different signal processing techniques can be used to simplify the interpretation of ultrasonic inspection data. These techniques aim at resolving the underlying physical structure of the inspected structure from the ultrasonic data that represent it. From a signal processing viewpoint, this is a deconvolution issue. To simplify the evaluation process, different deconvolution techniques for enhancing interpretability and visualization were investigated during the project. In particular, a deconvolution technique described in [2] yielded good results with real-world wind turbine blade data. Figure 6 shows the effect of this deconvolution technique that increases bond line resolution and thus facilitates the interpretation of the structure. As the deconvolution problem is an active field of research with many different approaches under investigation, future work may result in further improved interpretability and thus a simplified evaluation procedure.
