At the same time, pressure is applied to consolidate the polymer chains across the interface. NRC Aerospace successfully developed a robotic resistance welding system for joining thermoplastic composite components using its proprietary continuous resistance welding process. This technology should prove particularly useful for welding large skin/stringer panels and parts with complex geometries. Automated fibre placement Automated fibre placement (AFP) has become a key research technology within NRC Aerospace, leading to multiple partnerships and major investments. NRC purchased a medium-size fibre placement machine from Automated Dynamic Company and a large-size Viper 4000 fibre placement system from MAG Cincinnati. NRC uses these advanced automated fibre placement machines to conduct RTD and demonstration programmes on aerospace applications of the technology, in co-operation with the Canadian aerospace community and international companies. In an environment that is very competitive and particularly harsh for small and medium sized enterprises, NRC Aerospace has also set itself the objective of helping lower-tier Canadian suppliers to tackle the many challenges facing them by leveraging its position as a key stakeholder in the Canadian aerospace community and serving as a catalyst.
