COMPANIES Jushi lets its ambitious plans out of the bag China Jushi, the 15th Annual International Conference on Fibreglass, was held at Tongxiang City, Zhejiang Province, on 18-20 October 2009. T he conference attracted a considerable number of Chinese and international composite material manufacturers, high-level officials, and experts from the building materials industry. This year’s topic was "Enhance communication, build confidence, improve cooperation and overcome difficulties". The conference’s aim was to seek common development opportunities and strategic cooperation through press releases, technical lectures, presentations and communications. Sharing innovation “In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, innovation capabilities in science and technology have become much more important to governments and the whole society. The innovative efforts of the Jushi Group in the fibreglass industry did not only bring change to the sector, but along with a better command of the technologies. International markets are also making progress. Glass fibre is a promising product and can be used nearly everywhere. Just 15 years ago, glass-fibre consumption in China was very limited, due to the doubtful quality of the products, but things change fast. Growth over the past five years has been stronger than we had counted on, and the 2003-2008 period more prosperous than any other during the past thirty years. The next five years will also be good ones, but probably to a lesser extent. JCM: What is your strategy? Y. Z.: Our goal is to expand our capacity and market share on a global level. To do this, we have planned actions both in China and abroad. We are open to everything and are betting on our internal growth, although we are not ruling out acquisitions as long as the technology is there. Trying to mix corporate cultures can also be a problem. We see a lot of alliances around us, but also a lot of failed attempts. Acquiring is easy; managing things afterwards is more complicated. Success lies in your capacity to share your culture. also established the direction for the whole composite industry. By sharing technical innovation, communicating management experience and spreading its culture, Jushi is trying to promote broader cooperation and encourage more industrial companies to get involved in the transformation process”, said Mr. Zhang Yuqiang, Vice-Chairman of the China Building Material Federation and Chairman and President of the Jushi Group. JCM: On what sectors are you counting? Y. Z.: We are taking a close look at the environmental and renewable energy sectors, but also at automotive, aeronautics, and mass transportation. JCM: What is your R&D strategy? Y. Z.: Our E6 Enhanced Glass Fibre (Eglass) is a revolution in itself, its performance is that good. Quality and the search for new performance are both essential for our development. We devote a very large annual budget to R&D, with new formulations and always more applications as the result. We also continue to develop our skills groupwide. You can never have too many skills. Demand is always stronger in the area of highperformance applications. Here again, the limit to growth is the lack of knowledge, particularly in China. JCM: Who takes care of marketing at Jushi? Y. Z.: I take care of Jushi’s marketing myself. The goals are to increase our market share, reduce our costs, improve our quality, innovate and develop new applications. Jushi could also serve as an example for other companies, including AN INTERVIEW WITH YUQIANG ZHANG CHAIRMAN & PRESIDENT JUSHI GROUP CO., LTD. JEC Composites Magazine: What is your view on the crisis we are currently experiencing? YUQIANG ZHANG: Companies are less affected by the crisis than by their own problems. They need to overcome the obstacles to their growth. As for us, we are still trying to reduce our costs and improve the quality and performance of our products. In this way, we can help our customers to develop new markets. JCM: How do you see Jushi developing in future? Y. Z.: The group’s strategy is clear-cut. Glass fibre is and will remain Jushi’s core business. Nothing is going to change there. I am optimistic, because no other material can compete with glass fibre. Demand is strong in China, but still limited by the state of the art there. Consumption of glass fibre will increase No54 January 2010 / jec composites magazine
