COMPANIES g…/… Jushi lets its ambitious plans out of the bag some of our customers. JCM: What is your market approach? Y. Z.: Our approach is a global one, so we target both China’s domestic and export markets. Depending on the period and the opportunities, we focus more on one region or market than on another. This year, for example, our exports have dropped, but our sales in China have soared. We adapt our strategy to each market. JCM: What is your view on the fibreglass industry? Y. Z.: The fibre-glass industry is a small but very capitalistic sector, so it is very difficult for small companies to grow. The central issue is quality, and price. There is currently an over-capacity in China. The least efficient and most polluting production units will disappear. There will be streamlining in the future. JCM: What do you think about the competition from other fibres? Y. Z.: Carbon fibre is not really competitive in terms of cost and the application sectors involved. Basalt fibre production is still very limited, and the development and use of natural fibres are limited by technology. Competition is very motivating and obliges us to develop new products. JCM: What does your nomination by Forbes as best CEO of public companies in China in 2009 represent for you? Y. Z.: This recognition is not just for me, but also for all the teams contributing to Jushi’s success. The company’s employees are also represented in my name. JCM: Do you have any personal objectives? Y. Z.: My personal challenge is to reach the objectives that we have set for ourselves. There is no lack of challenges. We must continue to pursue our growth process, not just to grow, but also to become better and stronger. The reforms introduced in China more than thirty years ago have been beneficial for me and have helped me move forward. A manager must be an example for others. I started Jushi, and the company represents a good part of my life. I can’t think of any particular satisfaction, but have a few regrets. It’s a long journey and there are still many things to accomplish. But in the future, it might not be as easy to make rapid progress as in the past. JCM: What are the main challenges facing the composite industry? Y. Z.: In Europe and in the United States, the challenge is to reduce costs. In China, the challenge is technology. It is difficult to change people’s mindsets, and traditions are strong. Another challenge is regulations and standards. There is very little of that in China, and you can manufacture more or less as you wish. Sometimes there is a disparity between customer expectations and the quality that is delivered. 1,000 guests from 70 countries This year's conference attracted 1,000 domestic and international guests from 70 countries, including the USA, Canada, Germany, Spain, Italy, India, Japan, North Korea and South Korea. The participants had extensive, fruitful discussions on how to support the development of the composite material industry, construct a healthy fibreglass industry chain, and adapt new technology and new methods. Several agreements were officially concluded during the conference. The agreement establishing Jushi France Co. was signed and the Jushi Group presented a plaque to the Jushi Spain Company. The Jushi Group and Sichuan University signed a technical cooperation agreement. The Jushi Group also signed a framework agreement for strategic cooperation with domestic customers. opportunities created by the accelerated market recovery and introduce a large number of new products in an attempt to further consolidate the domestic market and expand the international market. The group will strive to maintain its market position in North America, Europe, the Middle East and other traditional markets, while making more efforts to develop emerging markets in Asia and South America. It will continue to set up overseas companies and support the development of overseas markets. Next year, domestic sales should account for 60% of the group’s total sales and the international market should account for 40%. In addition to the 10 new products launched this year, Jushi plans to launch and mass produce over ten more new products. The group intends to set up a new product development and process improvement system with the capability to roll out more than 10 new products a year. Finally, technical innovation and the construction of large furnaces at the Jiujiang and Chengdu bases will be pursued. The Jushi Group’s new strategic goal for 2012 is to complete the construction of a 600,000 metric ton (MT)/year fibreglass production base in Tongxiang (Zhejiang province), a 300,000 MT/year production base in Jiujiang (Jiangxi province) and a 600,000 MT/year base in Chengdu (Sichuan province). The group will also establish new overseas locations with a combined annual capacity of 120,000 MT to reach a total capacity of 1,500,000 MT/year, accounting for 25% of the world’s total fibreglass output. More information: www.jushi.com Development prospects Jushi will continue to search for new glass formulations and to develop new products and production technology. The company will invest at least 30 million USD a year in technology development to establish a glass formulation improvement and innovation system supported by patented technologies. Sales plan Jushi will take advantage of the favourable jec composites magazine / No54 January 2010
