FEATURE “Wind Energy” High-performance E6 glass fibre: meeting the needs of the wind energy industry E6 glass fibre has significantly higher strength and modulus than traditional E-glass. Jushi Group has developed size systems specifically designed for wind-blade manufacturing processes such as hand lay-up, prepregs and vacuum-assisted resin infusion. These new sizes are compatible with epoxy and unsaturated polyester resins used in wind-blade manufacturing, helping E6 glass fibre to meet the market demand for high-performance glass fibre. - up to 15% higher tensile strength; - up to 10% higher modulus (stiffness); - more durable blades and lower maintenance costs through improved fatigue resistance; - longer service life (especially for offshore locations) through significantly improved corrosion resistance. Dr BING ZHANG, R&D ENGINEER QIFENG FEI, PRODUCT ENGINEER JUSHI GROUP CO., LTD. ushi Group, one of the world’s major fibreglass producers, is committed to the development and improvement of fibreglass technology. To meet the technical requirements of the global wind power market for wind-blade reinforcements, Jushi started to develop its own high-performance glass fibres in 2006. These development efforts were successful, culminating in 2008 with the introduction of E6, a unique glass-fibre composition. E6 glass fibres have significantly better mechanical properties than traditional E-glass fibres, enabling the development of new applications, notably in the wind energy sector. Jushi is now offering this brand new glass fibre – officially launched in 2009 – to its global customers. During the development of E6 glass fibres, Jushi collaborated closely with its wind energy customers and took their stringent technical requirements fully into consideration, with a goal of offering better glass fibre for the manufacture of wind-turbine blades. J Sizing systems specifically designed for wind blade applications The current wind-blade manufacturing technology uses mainly polyester and epoxy resin systems. The key moulding processes are hand lay-up, prepreg placement and vacuum-assisted resin infusion. To optimize the performance and moulding efficiency of E6 glass reinforcements in these resins and manufacturing processes, Jushi R&D personnel have undertaken extensive, novel research of the sizing systems employed. The use of a modified epoxy emulsion and several special surface treatment agents improved the weaving performance and the bonding between glass fibres and the resin matrix. This significant technological breakthrough is illustrated in the SEM image in Figure 1, which shows strong interfacial adhesion. fig. 1: The proprietary For epoxy systems, size ensures Jushi developed the strong bonding between glass 398 direct roving, fibres and which employs a polymer matrix proprietary silanebased sizing on the E6 glass fibre surface. Specifically designed to reinforce epoxy resins, 398 is compatible with both amine and anhydride curing systems. This product is designed for weaving of UD, biaxial or multiaxial woven fabrics. It offers excellent weaving performance, resulting in clean, very flat fabrics. Combined with Improved performance drivers Longer wind blades reduce the cost of wind power generation, but require reinforcing glass fibre with improved mechanical properties and fatigue resistance. Moreover, wind turbines are installed in open outdoor areas, even offshore, where they are subject to harsh environmental conditions. These factors were fully considered during the development of the E6 enhanced glass fibre. Compared to traditional E-glass, E6 glass reinforcements provide a new technology platform for wind energy applications, enabling the manufacture of stronger, lighter and more durable blades due to the following benefits: jec composites magazine / No54 January 2010
