SPECIAL jec composites show 2009 > Stand T63 > Stand G74 New polyester multilayer system for phenolic resin Lithopol WR granules The Greek company Kesteco S.A. is a producer of fillers used in the production of cast-polymer articles with a granite or marble finish. Kesteco has also developed lightweight fillers that are used to save weight in such applications. Lightweight granules specially designed for the manufacture of glass-fibre swimming pools and spas are applied using a sprayup process and a suitable gelcoat. The composition of these granules prevents osmosis in such applications. Lithopol WR water-resistant granules are specially designed to be used as a spray granite filler in the manufacture of glassfibre swimming pool and spas. These granules are available in several different solid and granite colours. Lithopol chips are based on filled, cured polyester and are used in spray-up and casting applications for the production of kitchen sinks, counter tops, bathtubs, wall panels, SMC, and more, in a wide variety of solid and granite colours. Colour matching to customer requirements is possible. The granules are packed in 20-kg paper bags. www.kesteco.com Vacuopeel™ is a multilayer system (without adhesive or glue) used in vacuum moulding processes for manufacturing composite materials with techniques such as prepreg, wet lay-up, and thermoplastics. Vacuum moulding of composite materials involves a number of vacuum consumables that have an impact on fabrication and quality. This easy-to-use solution eliminates the risk of overlapping or omitted layers. To protect a part, the peel ply can be left on it until subsequent production stages, for example just before assembly, painting, or any other operation. There can be peeling problems with Vacuoplex™ when removing the breather felt only. It seems that most users would like to leave the peel ply on after vacuum moulding. To meet this demand, Diatex has further developed Vacuoplex™, now offering Vacuopeel™, a “smart” complex that has many benefits for part producers: time saving, improved composite quality, one product to buy instead of 3, and only one product to apply instead of 3. Vacuopeel™ can be removed in two steps after the curing process: the bleeder – which includes the perforated film – is removed first and then the peel ply can be removed at your convenience. Diatex has just launched the production of a new polyester version of the product to be used with phenolic resin. www.diatex.com Dow introduces innovative structural PU adhesives Dow is introducing Betamate™ 2850, a new, complementary range of > Stand P19/N20 structural adhesives. Based on two-component PU chemistry, these adhesives do not exhibit a rapid drop in properties at higher temperatures and remain flexible at lower temperatures thanks to a high glass transition temperature (Tg.) Several variations of the new Betamate product range are now available and can be applied following customer processing requirements. Bonding composites with polyurethane-based adhesives is a state-of-the-art technology in the transportation industry and is practiced worldwide. One limitation of the PU-based adhesive technology is the limited resistance to high temperatures due to its low Tg. This leads to a rapid loss of stiffness, bond strength and consequently structural integrity, at temperatures above +40°C which are temperatures normally used for composite applications. The Dow products allow engineers designing composite parts to rely on continued structural performance over a broad temperature range. Applications for this new, innovative adhesive technology include exterior panelling of commercial vehicles. This solution is also suitable for all applications where dissimilar substrates need to be connected and provide reliable strength. One recent application is the bonding of an aluminium roof to a steel chassis on a passenger car from a major German OEM.
