PREVIEW Light structural foam core > Stand L51 DIAB will be introducing several new developments at the JEC 2009 show. With a nominal density of 38 kg/m3, Divinycell H35 is the world’s lightest structural foam core. The addition of H35 further strengthens the position of Divinycell H grade as the structural core material offering the widest range of densities (38, 45, 60, 80, 100, 130, 160, 200 and 250 kg/m3). As a result, designers and specifiers are able to more closely match the density to the specification requirements of the application. The decision to introduce a 160 kg/m3 density to both Divinycell H and HP grades is particularly due to the fact that the proportion of larger boats being produced is rising and increasingly more designers and builders are requesting a density between the existing 130 and 200 kg/m3 for use in hull bottoms. By offering the additional density, DIAB maintains that designers and builders will be able to more accurately match the density to the loads. This should result in better weight optimization and reduced core material costs. As part of the further development of its core infusion process, DIAB has introduced the GRV finishing option. This option can reduce resin usage by over 50% and, as a result, offers further weight savings. This is especially the case when it is used in conjunction with grid-scored, scrim-backed (GS) core materials. The new finish will be available from all DIAB production facilities and on all cores that are used for infusion moulding including Divinycell H, HP, F and P grades. A good fit between the various core kit elements is essential for achieving consistent quality in terms of component performance, weight and surface finish. This is especially the case in infusion and resin transfer moulding because any gaps can result in resin shrinkage problems and cosmetic issues. With DIAB’s new Kit-Lok system, individual core kit parts can be securely locked together in and out of the mould in less than a second without using staples or adhesives. Each kit component features small rebated profiles on the edges of each part. Once the kit parts are placed in their correct position, they are securely locked together with the Kit-Lok ‘biscuit’ piece that is the same grade and density as the core kit parts to which it is being applied. Not only does the Kit-Lok system speed the lay-up process but also it ensures a very good ‘kit fit’ and reduces print-through problems. www.diabgroup.com High-performance pultrusion and closedmoulding resins > Stand D45 Components made from Crestapol® 1210 and 1212 high-performance resins will be on display at the Scott Bader stand at JEC 2009. Crestapol® resins are tough, lowviscosity, high-reactivity resins based on urethane acrylate chemistry that have been developed in-house. The main advantages of these urethane acrylate resins over unsaturated polyester resins are their very fast cure, no post-cure, higher productivity, and rapid closedmould cycle times of under 7 minutes. They produce tough, dimensionallystable parts with excellent surface finish and can be heavily filled to reduce costs and provide exceptional fire, smoke and toxic fume performance. Carbon fibre-reinforced phenolic composites for 3D parts > Stand S13 Quantum Composites Inc. has developed carbon fibre-reinforced phenolic Engineered Structural Composite (ESC) materials to meet the growing need for lightweight, highstrength composite moulding compounds with superior flammability properties. Carbon fibre-reinforced phenolic ESC materials are suitable for compression moulding into complex three-dimensional parts in comparatively short cycle times. With relatively high mechanical properties for a moulding compound, this material is suited for semi-structural applications. This class of materials is targeted for applications such as aircraft interiors and public transportation components that require lightweight composite materials with very low flammability, low smoke, low heat release and minimal generation of toxic gases. Typical properties: specific gravity 1.42, flexural strength 557 MPa, flexural modulus 35 GPa, tensile strength 262 MPa, Izod impact, notched 1333 J/M. www.quantumcomposites.com Crestapol 1210 is recommended for manufacturers looking for a costeffective, high-productivity closed-mould resin, which is easy to handle, even when highly filled. The very rapid mould-fill and cure ensure RTM cycle times of 6 -7 minutes. These resins are suitable for pultrusion, offering rapid haul-off rates. Crestapol 1210 is also ideal for RTM or infusion parts, as well as pultruded parts that must meet high fire, smoke and toxic fume test standards (NFF16-101; NFP92-501-M1,F0), as it can be heavily filled with ATH. Crestapol resins are ideal for rail, metro, truck, bus, and building & construction applications. Manufacturers in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Germany, Turkey and China are currently using Crestapol resins to make a variety of pultruded parts, doors, street furniture, and train and metro parts. www.scottbader.com No47 March-April 2009 / jec composites magazine 87
