Global water consumption is a major concern today, particularly in China, other Asian countries and Africa, where people are faced with water shortages or water leaks (approximately 20-30% in China). The goal of Sekisui Chemical Co., Ltd. is to contribute to further reducing the shortage of water in the future in China by offering fully-integrated composite infrastructures. Its innovation could be a solution for the construction of dams, maintenance of water service infrastructures, the uneven distribution of water and decreasing of water leak rate.

Besides possessing these good mechanical properties, carbon fibres are also conductive in nature. Utilising recycled carbon fibre sheets as heating elements not only provides a sustainable approach but it is also more efficient compared to the existing counter-parts. Over the past 20 years, graphite and nickel-chromium heating technology has been widely used as heating elements in many engineering applications. However, these components are very bulky and rigid, hence not allowing much flexibility which is essential in heating garment applications. The project was extended for 50 years in Japan and 10 years in China. The market for water supply systems in China is about 10 billion US$.

The development phase at the University of Nottingham consists in processing the fluffy recycled carbon fibre into non-woven sheets offering appropriate strength and conductivity characteristics. The heating fabric is made by sandwiching the conductive sheet with an adhesive Teflon sheet with copper bars crimped to the side for electrical connection purposes. Heating garment applications include heating gloves, vests, insoles and hats. The incorporation of the heating fabric into current delivery bags would not only provide flexibility but also a robust nature and stable heating performance.
