The development of TruPLAN began as a coordinated effort capitalizing on EADS Innovation Works’ (IW) expertise in research and development and on Magestic Systems Inc.’s (MSI) expertise with manufacturing optimization. Magestic Systems, Inc. is a global leader in enterprise software development that has specialized in material and process optimization across all CNC cutting and laser projection applications since 1991. TruPLAN is a multidisciplinary manufacturing analysis tool that provides designers with the capability to test new composite

parts against multiple manufacturing methods during the conceptual design phase in order to quickly collect the reliable data required to optimize the design of the part to be manufactured. TruPLAN uses a variety of parameters for each manufacturing strategy (CNC and robotic automated fibre placement, automated tape laying, hand-layup,

and filament winding, etc.) and users will be able to modify the design data and run the analyses again in order to determine the implications of design changes on the costs and process times of manufacturing. With current tools, modifying a certified part is both extremely costly and very difficult to do. The potential users for this innovation will be any design engineer, manufacturer, or consultant in charge of assessing the manufacturability of composite parts in industries such as aerospace, wind energy, automotive, transportation and marine.
