Some misconceptions about carbon inventories
The objective of a Bilan Carbone® carbon inventory is not to: - Compare 2 carbon inventories: the results are specific to the operation of the studied entity, which depends on numerous unique factors (geographical situation, number of employees, etc.). - Communicate one's results: the objective is to reduce GHG emissions; it is better to communicate information about the company’s initiatives and effective reductions. - Obtain a precise figure: the reasoning is more in terms of orders of magnitude, since there are many grey areas (including the data deriving from stakeholders such as suppliers). - Find a scapegoat: it is a method for supporting action, and therefore finding out who is best placed to act in order to reduce the emissions.

Who conducts a carbon inventory?
- Companies of all types and all sizes: SMEs, associations, corporations, industrial activities, transport companies, service companies, administrations, etc. - Companies committed to a sustainable development (ISO 14001 or the like) or a CSR approach: the carbon inventory will provide a relevant and concrete indicator vis-à-vis the continuous improvement approach. - Administrations and local authorities in the framework of a Territorial Climate Plan or Agenda 21. - Organisers of conferences and congresses: carbon inventory of all events. - Domestic CO2 projects: taking stock of greenhouse gas emissions generated by projects in support of the approach. - Design offices: working on a subcontracting basis to conduct carbon inventories. - Agriculture, livestock, agrifood: taking stock of greenhouse gas emissions generated by agricultural activities (agricultural carbon inventory).

The Bilan Carbone® may be supplemented with support for the implementation of GHG reduction initiatives, product life cycle analysis, functional ecodesign, the implementation of a carbon compensation policy for unavoidable emissions or the definition of a carbon communication strategy (internal and external).
