interview
ERIC TEISSEIRE, SALES DIRECTOR, FOREST LINE

JEC Composites Magazine: You have been working in composites since 1984. What share of your business does this represent today? ERIC TEISSEIRE: For our plant in Capdenac, the revenue from composites amounts to between 30 and 50% from one year to the next. Our growth peaks are linked to aerospace investment programmes on projects such as the A380 and the B787.

JCM: Is this a growing business? E.T.: Composites is indeed a growth activity. More and more aircraft parts are now made of composites. Today we manufacture the wings of the B787 and of the Rafale out of composites. Structural parts, such as the wing-box and keel-beam, are also made of composites. JCM: What type of equipment does your composites range comprise? E.T.: We have an Atlas two-phase tape layer. This 6-axis machine can place 12-inch tapes
Machines in production

JCM: What are their main benefits and drawbacks? E.T.: We are the only company able to produce such vital and complex parts as wings entirely automatically, with high levels of productivity. This technology remains complex. Only through testing in our technical centre at Capdenac 4C can the value and possibilities of our solutions be demonstrated. JCM: Do you consider proposing new equipment to the market? E.T.: We have launched the new 6-axis Atlas V2 tape layer, with two machines already sold.

and pre-cut 6-inch widths on the Access machine. We also have an Atlas FP fibre placement machine. These machines are designed for thermoset composites, but can handle the placement of dry fibres for producing RTM or RFI type reinforcements and thermoplastic prepregs.

JCM: What are your lines of research? E.T.: We are working on automation and on improving productivity. We want to make this a predictable procedure, with full process control, traceability of the work carried out and optimum quality (lap &

JCM: You have a significant presence in the aerospace industry. Are you looking to expand into other markets? E.T.: We are currently only present in the aerospace market. Our concept is wellsuited to the manufacturing of lowproduction-run technological parts such as are to be found on aircraft. We do, of course, remain attentive to market expectations.

production parameters, bar-codes for spool traceability, and optimized CAD/CAM layup paths. The Forest-Liné V2 tape layer shows major advantages: - high feedrate, more than doubled since

2006, - productivity up to 132 lbs/hr (60 kg/hr) for complex double-curvature parts, - optimized scrap rate, ranging from 5 to 10% depending on part complexity, - layup capability for non-developable surfaces, slopes, ramps and pad-ups,

No64 April 2011 / jec composites magazine - 100% traceability, - supervision with compilation of production events, - high accuracy, with tape positioning within 0.5 mm.

JCM: More generally, and in your opinion, what are the obstacles that composites need to overcome in order to ensure even faster growth? E.T.: This process remains complex with high raw material costs. Automation for the production of complete parts is still difficult. Many operations, such as the placement of ribbing, are still carried out manually. We also need to integrate the production of Invar moulds and the autoclave curing step. As can be imagined, on account of these different stages, the manufacturing process is long and costly. gap) of the parts produced. With our two latest generations of machines, productivity (floor-to-floor) has been doubled, with better quality of placement and lap & gap tolerance reduced by half.

A dedicated centre of expertise

To further develop the technology and allow customers to test their future needs, Forest-Liné created the Capdenac Composite Centre of Competence (4C) in its Capdenac factory in southern France. The following machines are available: 6-axis Atlas V2 tape layer, Access cutting machine, 6-axis Atlas FP fibre-placement machine, in a dedicated temperaturecontrolled hall with badge access. n
