Material requirements continue to increase steadily and composite properties such as toughness or impact resistance need to be improved. Adding flexibilizers is a well-known solution to increase the flexibility of epoxy resin; however this reduces the composite’s final properties such as temperature resistance, modulus and strength. Huntsman Advanced Materials recently developed a series of new nano-based systems which significantly improve fracture resistance without affecting vital properties such as temperature resistance, modulus, strength and viscosity. Nano-modified toughened systems were developed for processes like RTM, prepregs, RFI, wet lay-up and adhesives. An ice hockey stick produced by RTM using the Araldite NanoTech composite resin will be displayed at the show. It received a warm welcome from professional players. They very much appreciated its good feeling, improved shock resistance (less damage) and good damping properties (more comfortable). These new matrix systems can be used for large variety of parts in sport goods (bicycles, etc.) and can be extended to other applications like wind turbine blades and any structural applications that require a higher level of impact resistance. www.huntsman.com/advanced_materials > Booth E13 Divinycell F is a significant breakthrough in core material development, offering low fire, smoke and toxicity (FST) properties coupled with good mechanical and processing characteristics. Developed by DIAB primarily for the commercial aircraft and public transportation markets, this product more than exceeds the US and European regulatory requirements for aircraft interiors, not to mention the European train FST requirements. Other key features include superior damage tolerance, exceptional fatigue life, low water absorption and excellent heat ageing at 180°C. Chemical resistance to the majority of aircraft fluids is also excellent. Divinycell F is compatible with most common composite manu-facturing processes and most common thermoplastic and thermoset resins including epoxies and modern phenolics used by both aircraft and train manufacturers. With its superior fire properties, Divinycell F is ideal for aircraft interiors including wall panelling, ceiling modules, luggage bins and doors/lockers. Its close-cell structure makes it particularly suitable for galleys and toilets. It is also an excellent sandwich core material for train and subway interiors, exceeding as it does, the new EN 45545-2 regulatory requirements. The FP H Atlas system is equipped with a mobile column and a horizontal ram to work on a stationary vertical mould (6-axis interpolation) or rotating mould (7axis interpolation). The FP V Atlas system is equipped with a vertical ram to lay tows on a stationary horizontal mould (6-axis interpolation) or rotating mould (7-axis interpolation).
