Since it is a prototype, we created very simple male moulds. On the other hand, we used exactly the same fabrication techniques as those used for racing boats, i.e. carbon/epoxy prepreg over Nomex core and foam in certain places. save weight and gain stiffness. Futur Fibers produced the rigging in PBO (poly(p-phenylenebenzobisoxazole), which considerably helped to reduce the weight in comparison to steel rods. And North’s moulded sail technology turned out to be the lightest solution. Tecnora and carbon fibres are sandwiched between two films to keep the desired shape. As you can see, composite technology is everywhere on this boat, but it doesn’t show; the owner wanted the carbon to be invisible. As a result, Ciao Gianni has an almost classic profile with its white body and silver-coloured anodized winches. The only sign of the boat’s uniqueness and high performance is the reverse bow. AN INTERVIEW WITH GILLES OLLIER, FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR, MULTIPLAST JEC Composites Magazine: What is the story behind the Ciao Gianni? GILLES OLLIER: Ciao Gianni is the result of a meeting with Jacky Setton. We’ve known each other since the 1980s. He called me last autumn to find out if we could build a 60’ boat and deliver it ready to sail by June 2009. When I told him that it was possible, he came immediately to see us so we could finalize all the details and agree on a price. Ciao Gianni is a boat that was built in conditions of mutual trust. O.: Jacky Setton has already owned many sailboats and motorboats, so he thought long and hard about the Ciao Gianni. He had already defined everything: the reverse bow, the cockpit with two Richard Schuttz seats, and the wheelhouse optimized to make solo The whole structure was cured at 120°C in one of our three ovens. The goal with this boat was to lower the centre of gravity to allow sailing in 20-knot winds without reefing. We made efforts to reduce the weight of the mast, rigging and sails, and to limit the weight inside the boat by carefully balancing all the masses. JCM: Which architect and partners did Multiplast choose to work with to complete this project? G. O.: Jacky Setton has had dealings with architect German Frers for a long time, and it was his son, Mani Frers who designed the boat based on Jacky Setton’s drawings. To build the boat, Multiplast had a very wide choice of potential partners, but he did need to keep within a budget. We chose to work with Hall Spars for the mast and rigging. The carbon tubing was made of high-modulus carbon fibres to Fig. 3: Bulkheads. JCM: To make the carbon-epoxy hull, Multiplast used the most efficient techniques at every stage of the process, from the mould to the finishing steps. Can you elaborate on that? G. O.: Multiplast has a great capacity to adapt to problems that crop up. As you know, Multiplast’s history is linked to the history of composites.
