EDITORIAL 46th year President and CEO/Publisher: Frédérique Mutel mutel@jeccomposites.com Technology is the key for the Asian Composite Industry The composite market in Asia is mainly driven by economic growth. Since 2002, Asia has experienced high growth rates, at around 8% p.a. In 2000, Asia accounted for 25% of the global composite consumption. It now represents 42%, while being expected to reach 50% in 2013. With major growth markets in China and India, along with significant growth in the Middle East, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia, the current composite market amounts to 18 billion euros in Asia. Consumption is also stable in Australia, Japan and South Korea. Massive direct public investments and favourable regulations are boosting the growth of the main markets and we regularly hear of new projects in most sectors. The JEC Asia 2009 show (14-16 October 2009) reflects the huge growth of the composite industry in the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, Australia and New Zealand. It also reveals the tremendous potential of composites with new companies eager to invest in composite solutions and new leaderships striving to emerge with dominating brands. This huge, booming market requires improved manufacturing processes. In Asia, manual processes still prevail while injection moulding processes remain underused. For instance, manual processes represent 31% of all processing methods compared with 16% in North America and 17% in Europe. But this is going to change. JEC Asia 2009 reflects this ongoing move, with 35% of exhibitors showcasing equipment, machines and software solutions. The use of automated processes is growing steadily throughout the region. There are two main reasons why automation is expanding. Firstly, labour costs need to be reduced, especially in countries such as Japan or Australia. Secondly, automation is used in low-labourcost countries as a way to increase product quality and reproducibility by erasing the human-error factor. The second annual JEC Asia Show and Conference will host more than 300 leading players on an expanded exhibiting surface area with a third hall added. Over the past twelve months, the JEC Group mobilised its technowatch and information expertise to design ten different programmes that make the Show’s kaleidoscope setting easier to decode.
