We are now adapting the process for new products and technologies to reinforce thermoplastic lineals, especially for large and coloured profiles." Nicolas Bedouin, sales and marketing leader, Specialties Europe, OCV™ Reinforcements: "This award is the result of three years of true codevelopment, starting from scratch and involving four companies. When first proposed, the application seemed to be a good opportunity for Twintex reinforcements except that the product's standard polypropylene matrix was not a good match for PVC. The solution was to develop a new Twintex product with a PVC-compatible matrix. There was a close co-operation between the teams working on the product (Twintex reinforcement), the process (reinforced extrusion) and the application (window lineals). After overcoming several technical challenges and running many tests at OCV Reinforcements, Bouvet and Lorillard, a suitable thermoplastic reinforcement was developed. This kind of tailored solution is key to Owens Corning's focus on delivering differentiated value to customers.” Strong cooperation Rossi Stamp developed all the equipment needed to manufacture the products (extrusion and pultrusion line, including die). Lorillard coordinated the design process of the reinforced-PVC window frame and will sell the product on the market. The profile was entirely designed by IDA, an industrial design office that specializes in industrial products and component systems for building, architecture and urban amenities. Bouvet monitored the product and process development and optimization steps. The company designs and extrudes its own profiles, using 10,000 metric tons of PVC powder every year to produce 10,000 km of profiles on 15 automated lines. On the raw material side, OCV Reinforcements developed a special, PVC-compatible Twintex grade based on PET + PBT resin. Conclusion The new profile concept offers significantly enhanced performance advantages: • improved mechanical, thermal and acoustic properties, • smaller profile section, equivalent to aluminium profiles, • new, characteristic Twinea design. Other benefits of the new thermoplastic FREE SUBSCRIPTION (1 year/8 issues) technology include the ability to place additional reinforcement only where necessary; the use of standard cutting and assembly methods; post-forming, texturizing and welding potential; greater design freedom; thinner profiles providing a wider window opening and the benefits of natural light; and the ability to mill and re-use waste in nondecorative profiles. The production process simplifies assembly work and provides stiffer windows without modifying the production equipment. Finally, the technology can be applied to all types of thermoplastic profiles. Twinea profiles are marked to help identify them for a specialized thermoplastic recycling process after their useful life. They can be ground and reused in cladding applications.
