Since it was created in 1989, the centre has been a pioneer in closed-mould techniques for the boat-building industry. Over the years, it has performed more than 500 technology transfers in light RTM for mass transportation applications, boat building, buses, etc., becoming a leading centre in light RTM processing. Since 2000, PPE has invested a lot in R&D and equipment to prepare for the landing of RTM technology in high-tech applications like aeronautics and aerospace. P Light RTM is considered as a cost-effective, environmentfriendly (no VOC, vs. hand lay-up or spray-up), and easy-toimplement process. The basic principle consists in pumping the resin into the mould to impregnate the dry fibre positioned in the cavity (Fig. 1). Evolution of the RTM process as a strategic orientation for PPE PPE has kept up with the sector’s evolution, trying always to be a step ahead. In the process, it has built internationally recognized expertise in closed moulding processes such as RTM, infusion and compression. PPE and ESI Group (developer of the PAM-RTM software for RTM injection simulation) have established a partnership to use PPE’s process expertise and ESI Group’s existing PAM-RTM tool to set up a spearhead process-virtualization unit. Main characteristics Light RTM - pressure: negative pressure (-1 bar) to pump resin - geometrical tolerance: around 0.5 mm - fibre volume content: up to 30% depending on type of reinforcement - reinforcement permeability limit: down to 1.10-9 m² RTM evolution: from widespread Light RTM to Heavy RTM, or VARTM When resin transfer moulding (RTM) began to be widely used, the most common technique was Light RTM used in boat building, mass transportation, construction, and other industries. The main advantages of Light RTM lie in a combination of “light” tools (composite mould), “light” investments (no need Heavy RTM - pressure: up to 10 bars - geometrical tolerance: around 0.1 mm - fibre volume content: up to 60% depending on type of reinforcement - reinforcement permeability limit: down to 1.10-13 m² 28 jec composites magazine / No50 July-August 2009
