PROFESSION ©G. Martin-Raget/Orange EXTERNAL DESIGNER Jean-Baptiste Epron successfully combines his work and his passion, the decoration of ocean going yachts and racing. A look at the contented sailor / artist NOTHING GAVE THE INKLING THAT THIS PARISIAN, who did business studies would end up giving colour and life to racing yachts. Except he loved boats and drawing too. When he had to stand on his own two feet, the youngster, who gave free reign to his mind and pencil, made a choice: he would become a boat decorator. At that point in time, sailing sponsoring was a booming business and "JB" (to be pronounced GBay) grabbed the opportunity to express his talent. His first client was Athéna, when the insurance company was sponsoring Franck Cammas, the winner of the Solitaire du Figaro in 1996. Jean-Baptiste, just as at ease with the sheets, became friends with the racers and was soon their licensed artist. beauty and usefulness? Beauty, because the picture of the boat will be seen in many places and usefulness, so that the decoration on the boat publicises the name of a product or a brand. The job requires intelligence and talent: two qualities that "JB" possesses with his long list of commissioned work with dozens of racing boats decorated by him. The artist, who designs using a "Mac" as his work tool "works alone for sailing and accepts to work as part of a team for other sporting projects. He does not sign his creations and is not looking for posterity. "I work for my clients and the important thing is to publicise their image." What he means is not his. In practice, he puts forward various projects and the final decision rests with the owner. "It’s very interesting, as it involves the part of the project that the sponsors can control much more than the technical aspect, which is down to the sailor. It’s here they can leave their imprint," insists Jean-Baptiste. In practice too, the sponsor wants to be seen and the skipper wants a boat that is not too ugly. "I think about the people, who choose photos for magazines and those that select footage On the right side of the wave His job usually begins the day after the good news has been announced, when the racer signs with a backer. He has to try and express with colour and pictures the values or message of the sponsor. For that, the business course followed by the self-taught artist allowed him to understand more easily the needs of the client. How can we reconcile ©Generali Ocean Racing - april 2007
