The crisis hit luxury hard and the sector had a difficult time adjusting to declines after years of double-digit growth. Meanwhile, in the US, unemployment remains high, consumers are still holding on to their cash and retailers and manufacturers are nervous about the upcoming holiday season. But beyond the financial crisis, there are more, if not deeper reasons for this uncertainty. In luxury the rules of the game are changing. This is not just because Lehman Brothers went bust, but due to an increasingly savvy consumer and to the internet, which has seen customers dictating to brands, rather than marketing departments telling people what to do. And in the US there is a quiet revolution in how products are being sold, with e-commerce, drugstores and TV shopping stealing more share from traditional prestige distribution. In light of this, should the market take on a little more risk and accept a greater level of uncertainty in their strategies rather than just repeat the same old models and expect a different result?
