Spa case studies Wellness Water worlds K Spa A look at four standout spas from around the globe Location: London, UK Size: 558m2 (6,006ft2) On offer: Hydrotherapy pool, Snow Paradise, samarium, sauna, sun meadow, dry flotation tank, experience showers, aromatic herbal steam room Treatments: Tailored pampering journeys including consultation, bodywork and lunch. Features: K Spa recently opened after a major revamp. Upon arrival each guest meets with a therapist, who creates a spa journey, or “holistic path” that is meant to meet each individual’s wellbeing needs. K spa features London’s first Snow Paradise—a Finnish treatment in a “cooling oasis” that “invites guests to freeze their way to good health” at a temperature of -15°. The spa’s wet area has “wall loungers”, or nooks built into the wall where guests can relax on suede cushions. The Sun Meadow offers light therapy treatment and its oversized sunken bed is used for traditional Thai massage sessions. Why it’s good: Some guests have said the spa’s design and the need for card keys to access certain areas can be a bit confusing. The Banyan Tree Bintan Location: Bintan, Indonesia Size: 10 individual private spa villas of varying sizes On offer: sunken baths, outdoor showers, Jacuzzi Treatments: Rainmist steam bath and shower, combined yoga and massage packages, Balinese massage, Royal Banyan Herbal Pouch massage using a pouch dipped in warm sesame oil Why it’s good: The spa, which is part of the Banyan Tree Bintan resort, seamlessly blends the tropical landscape with holistic Eastern healing therapies. Instead of a classic spa facility, treatments are given in 10 private spa villas, several of which have views of the South China Sea or the surrounding forest. A wide range of treatments are on offer, including the Javanese Lulur package, which consists of a Balinese massage, scrub, yogurt splash and milk mask, and rain mist steam bath. The spa offers his and hers versions of most of the treatments and puts a strong focus on treatments for couples. It also incorporates a wellness aspect in its offer through yoga lessons. What could be improved: The Bintan complex is one of The Banyan Tree’s older resorts, and will soon be in need of renovation in some areas. September 2010 - N°3 - BW Confidential xx
