J. M.: Yes, the Composite Industrie
acquisition is a good example of that - and
then, it is part of the group's history and
our great capacity to integrate and cement
relationships with new organizations.
JCM: How do you propose to increase the
penetration rate of composites, speci cally
in the automotive sector?

J. M.: Here's a good example: Hutchinson

our customers all along the value chain,
from customized material design to the
integration of connected solutions.
JCM: Currently, which of your markets are
the most active?

J. M.: Automotive and commercial
aviation. We supply all the major
international players in these two markets.
JCM: How do you organize in order to deal
with these different sectors?

J. M.: We have five globally organized
product lines. We also have joint resources
that we share, i.e. our corporate R&D
resources and our industrial locations.
Our Corporate Research Centre brings
together more than 200 engineers and
technicians to move the basic research
forward and create high-value-added
products upstream. The Centre has highperformance resources in the fields of
material formulation, acoustics, numerical
simulation, vibration mechanics, and
processing methods. In close collaboration
with our customers, 27 technical expertise
centres worldwide develop our solutions
and benefit from the same resources.

Hutchinson's recent September acquisition
of Composite Industrie is consistent
with the strong growth of Hutchinson's'
aerospace business, enabling it to step up
the deployment of composite technologies
in that sector. Composite Industrie is
a global supplier of cockpits and cabin
fittings, including the cockpit for the recent
A350 XWB, and also of air conditioning
duct systems for a number of Airbus
programmes. It also manufactures a very
broad range of composite products for
other customers, like Dassault Aviation,
ATR, Airbus Helicopters and Safran.
The group currently relies on six sites (three
in France and one each in Germany, Canada
and Morocco) and 1,200+ employees. The
oldest site cumulates 60 years of experience.
Our technical composite centre, Cetec,
serves to sustain our existing aeronautical
sites through the use of new technologies
and also to develop new technologies for
the automotive industry, with that sector's
economic constraints in mind.

worked with Peugeot Sports and Total
to develop front and rear axles made of
composite materials, integrating four
functions: the suspension (without
springs), the wheel alignment (without
wishbones), roll stability control, and
damping of vibrations and noise from the
road. Our new solution makes it possible
to reduce the weight of the suspension
function drastically, by 13.6 kilos. It is
not only very attractive for automotive
builders, it also meets European regulatory
requirements.
A second example that illustrates how
determined we are is our work on
processes. The point is to adapt existing
(composite) processes for the economic
constraints in the automotive industry.
From the technological viewpoint, we have
three development goals:
- Creating parts with out-of-mould quality (RTM) in cycles that are under three
minutes;
- Developing thermoplastic composite
solutions, because of their recyclability
and ease of forming and moulding;
- Increasing vertical integration (for the
intermediate semi-finished products).

JCM: Are you still focused on external
growth opportunities in that area?

JCM: Within this organization, where do
composite materials come in? You are
investing a lot in composites. What more
precisely are your projects?

J. M.: Composite materials are enriching
the products in our business lines. They
are present wherever function requires it.
