is KCTECH?

Kyusoon Park: Located in
Jeonju, South Korea, KCTECH
(Korea Institute of Carbon
Convergence Technology) is
the only carbon-specialized
R&D Institute in Korea
developing core technology
and commercializing carbon
convergence components.
As a leading organization of
the Carbon Valley Project,
which is funded by the Korean
government with a budget of
200 million dollars from 2011
to 2016, KCTECH has carbon
fibre manufacturing equipment
for R&D and technical support
activities. Recently, the Institute
opened the Carbon Composites
Manufacturing
Technology
Center to promote the growth
of carbon businesses and
the development of carbon
technology.
It also offers FRP manufacturing
equipment as a total solution

KCTECH was the main sponsor of the competition, alongside Spring Singapore,
KDX, RSA Capital, Airbus Helicopters, Ludwig Bölkow Campus and EOS. We asked
Mr. Kyusoon Park to explain the reasons for their involvement in this project.

institutes and industries. Moreover, KCTECH is playing a
crucial role in extending Korea's
carbon industry by helping
companies explore the global
market by attending international
tradeshows

analysing
technology trends, but also
through an educational training
programme related to carbon
composites that spans from
basic knowledge to practical
applications.
JCM: What is KCTECH's area of expertise in the eld of composites

K. P.: By conducting R&D
on carbon composites manufacturing equipment with acade-

mics, institutes and industries,
KCTECH acquired core technologies such as PAN-based
carbon fibre manufacturing,
intermediate manufacturing (carbon fibre spreading, woven
fabrics, and non-crimp fabrics),
CFRP manufacturing (braiding,
automated fibre placement,
HP-RTM, microwave oven,
and pultrusion) and postprocessing (waterjet, ultrasonic
technologies, etc.).
In co-operation with advanced
research institutes in the United
Kingdom, Germany and the
USA, the institute has been
developing key technologies as
well.

innovation?

K. P.: Innovation can help

create new businesses to meet
users' demands and market trends
through new ideas, methods and
devices. This can be achieved
through more effective processes,
technologies and products that can
be readily implemented.
KCTECH can innovate through
the development of improved
processes and technology for
CFRP commercialization based
on the detection and improvement
of critical factors.

K. P.: While carbon fibre

composites have generally been
used in automotive and aeronautic
applications for weight reduction,
the companies engaged in the
Startup Competition highlight
the potential of diverse carbon
fibre composites applications as
a replacement for conventional
reinforcements.
