I business GOLF GOLF WHAT’S NEW IN THE WORLD OF GOLF DUBAI CREEK DUBAI Less than 20 years ago Dubai had only one sand golf course. Today however, the destination boasts an impressive portfolio of golfing venues, attracting tourists from around the world. In 2001 Dubai won the title of ‘Emerging Golf Destination of the Year’, and has been nominated ‘Established Golf Destination of the Year’ three times since 2003. Dubai Golf manages three of Dubai’s most unique and internationally renowned golf courses; Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, and Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis and ‘Wadi by Faldo’. Each one presents golfers of all levels with distinct and different challenges. Emirates Golf Club Emirates Golf Club boasts two of the city’s finest courses with natural rolling desert terrain; the 7,185 yard, par 72 Majlis course and the recently redesigned 7,328-yard, par 72 ‘Wadi by Faldo’. In 2005 Golf Digest voted the Majlis course as one of the ‘100 Best Courses Outside the USA’. Recently, Business Traveller Magazine also voted it ‘Best Golf Course In The Middle East’ for the fifth consecutive year. The ‘Wadi by Faldo’ course, originally designed by Jeremy Pern and Karl Litten, underwent a major redevelopment by Nick Faldo in 2005 and reopened on 1st October 2006, taking the course and all of the practice facilities at the Club to a much higher level. Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club The Emirates Golf Club was the Middle East’s first all-grass championship golf course, opened in 1988. Host of the PGA European Tour sanctioned Dubai Desert Classic, the club provides 36 holes and a signature Clubhouse in the shape of a Bedouin tent. 18 Situated in the heart of the city on the shores of the creek, Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club is the only 18-hole golf resort in the region incorporating an 18-hole championship golf course, extensive golf academy, six restaurants and bars, a state of the art gymnasium and tropical leisure swim- ming pool, the 225 bedroom Park Hyatt Dubai, 92 residential executive villas, a 121 berth marina, Yacht Club and Golf Clubhouse. The par 71 golf course rolls 6,857 yards along fairways lined with date and coconut palms, water hazards and a shrubbery. Originally designed by Karl Litten, the course was redesigned by European Golf Design in association with Thomas Björn in 2005. It now boasts a new front nine as well as remodelled tees, greens and topography on the back nine providing an even greater challenge for all levels of golfers. The sixth hole even incorporates a constructed tee located on stilts 10 metres into the Creek. Dubai Creek’s Golf Academy offers a 9-hole Par 3 course, which is perfect for beginners looking to learn the game of golf and for experienced players wishing to practice their short game skills. In addition, there is a spacious driving range and dedicated putting, chipping and bunker practice greens, with all facilities floodlit until 10pm. The Academy provides a Golf Swing Analysis Studio, along with a EMIRATES GOLF CLUB Club Fitting Centre, Pro Shop and Café, offering all the latest in golfing accessories and equipment. Dubai Creek’s three PGA qualified Golf Professionals are also available for lessons and clinics, offering the latest technology to improve the player’s game. The Golf Clubhouse, modelled on the sails of a traditional Arab Dhow, became an internationally recognised landmark and was named Best Clubhouse in Golf World’s ‘Best of the Best’ awards.
