I news PAFOS APHRODITE FESTIVAL PRESENTS VERDI’S “IL TROVATORE” he curtains will open on the Pafos Aphrodite Festival for the ninth consecutive year this summer with what promises to be the greatest performance yet. Attracting audiences from Cyprus and overseas to its outstanding harbourside castle venue, the Pafos Aphrodite Festival is one of the most important cultural events in the region. Scheduled for the 31st of August and the 1st and 2nd of September, this year’s festival will see the Abai State Academic Opera & Ballet Theatre present Giuseppe Verdi’s “Il Trovatore”. This renowned opera completes the “Trilogy of Verdi”, after “La Traviata” and “Rigoletto”, which have already been presented at the Pafos Aphrodite Festival. “Il Trovatore” was presented for the first time at Rome’s Theatre Apollo in 1853. It was such a success that the critics of the day hailed Verdi as the “Caesar of Art”. The libretto was written by Salvatore Cammanaro and based on the Spanish drama of the same title by Antonio Garcia Gutierrez. T It is clear that Verdi saw in “Il Trovatore” a continuation of “Rigoletto”. This time the central character is unconventional gipsy Azucena. She, like Rigoletto, burned with twin passions: revenge, but also parental love. The structural and stylistic elements introduced by Verdi in “Rigoletto” are evolved further in “Il Trovatore”, making this one of the most beautiful and popular operas of the 19th century. It is a work of beautiful imagery, exquisite arias, inspiring chorals, and intense passion, with escalating intensity and an unforgettable finale. The Pafos Aphrodite Festival 2007 receives both private and public sponsorship. Founding sponsors include the Ministry of Education & Culture; the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism; and the Cyprus Tourism Organization. Sponsors of the events are BuySell and Paschali Developers, while supporters include the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, the Bank of Cyprus –American Express, Shacolas Group and the Evresis Call Centre. The hospitality sponsor is the Hotel Alexander the Great, while the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) and Politis newspaper are once again the media sponsors of the event.
