Teijin strengthens carbon fibre operations in
China and Taiwan
Teijin announced in April the establishment of Teijin
Carbon in Shanghai, China, and Teijin Carbon Taiwan
in Taipei, Taiwan, as affiliated sales companies to capitalize on the expanding demand for carbon fibre and further
strengthen Teijin's global business capabilities.
Both affiliated companies will serve as bases to develop carbon fibre business and expand sales in their promising markets. Previously, the offices were established in Shanghai in
December 2002 and Taipei in April 2014 to identify demand
opportunities and provide customer services in China and
Taiwan. These two offices now have been respectively absorbed
by the new subsidiaries.
Internal collaborations will also be developed with Teijin
Carbon Singapore, an existing Southeast Asian affiliated carbon
fibre company, to strengthen Teijin's presence the fast-growing Asian region ranging from upstream to downstream business sectors.The demand for carbon fibre is growing in China,
Taiwan and Southeast Asia.

BMW Group invests over €10 million in an additive
manufacturing campus
Located in Oberschleissheim, north of Munich, the facility will
allow the company to continue developing its technological
expertise in industrial-scale 3D printing.

"Our new Additive Manufacturing Campus will concentrate the
full spectrum of the BMW Group's 3D printing expertise at a single
location. This will enable us to test new technologies early on and
continue developing our pioneering role," said Udo Hänle, head of
production integration and pilot plant.
"Our new facility will be a major milestone in additive manufacturing
at the BMW Group. The team there will evaluate new and existing
technologies in both plastics and metals printing and develop them
to series maturity. Our goal is to provide the optimum technology
and process chain, be it for individual components, small production
runs or even large-scale manufacturing," added Jens Ertel, head of
the BMW Group's Additive Manufacturing Centre and the future
campus director.
Within the BMW Group production network, the new Additive
Manufacturing Campus will foster the latest technologies in this
field in much the same way as a pilot plant and make them available
for use within the network. Much of the work carried out there will
focus on part manufacturing for prototype construction, series
production and customised solutions. The Additive Manufacturing
Campus will also act as an interdisciplinary training and project
area, for instance for development engineers. Located in an existing
building with a footprint of over 6,000m², it will accommodate
up to 80 associates and over 30 industrial systems for metals and
plastics. It is scheduled to go on stream in early 2019.

Launch of the Composite Application Centre in Singapore
An international group of companies and research entities
announced in April the launch of the Singapore-based
Composite Application Centre (CAC). CAC officially started
its operation on 1 May 2018 and will ramp-up activities and
capabilities throughout this year. Additional companies are also
slated to join in later this year.
Spearheaded by Composite Cluster Singapore, the group currently
consists of ten companies and two research entities:
- Admiralty International - Composite manufacturing
- Cevotec - Advanced fibre layup equipment and software
- Composite Cluster Singapore - Composite engineering and manufacturing solutions
- Covestro AG - Materials
- Fraunhofer IGCV - Applied R&D
- Hufschmied Zerspanungssysteme - Machining tools
- iNDTact - Sensor systems and data analytics
- Plasmatreat - Plasma equipment
- Sakura Tech - Plastics manufacturing and tooling
- Singapore Polytechnic's School of Mechanical and Aeronautical
Engineering - Education and research
- Stratagem Innovation Singapore - Composite repair, inspection and
training
- Filacon Systems by Tajima - Advanced preforming equipment
CAC will provide a platform for developers and users of composite
technologies focusing on customer trials, prototyping, pilot
manufacturing, maintenance, training and support services.
Product companies can leverage on CAC's combined expertise and
facilities to reduce their initial investments and risk for compositerelated product design and manufacturing. Manufacturers
can utilize CAC's support to build or expand their composite
manufacturing capabilities.

DSM invests to increase global Dyneema®
production capacity
The company is investing to install additional new UD technology
at its plant in Heerlen, the Netherlands, and its plant in Greenville,
NC, USA, and will also make improvements to the existing production lines to expand its Dyneema® UD and Dyneema® fibre capacity, incorporating the latest technologies. The global production
capacity of Dyneema® UD will be increased by more than 20%, further strengthening DSM's product leadership under the Dyneema®
brand.
The capacity expansion will enable DSM to serve the growing
global customer demand. The growing domestic US market will
be served better from the Greenville, N.C., facility. The additional Dyneema® UD and Dyneema® fibre capacity will become available in the course of 2018 and is due be fully on stream by Q1 2019.
In addition to expanding capacity, DSM Dyneema will also further improve its carbon footprint, delivering on its brand promise
Dyneema®, the Greenest Strength™.
