the machine components can be operated
centrally via a control system.
High flexibility and global service
Another advantage of the new iPul pultrusion machines is their flexibility. They
are suitable for processing diverse matrix
materials such as epoxy, polyurethane
or, in the future, polyamide 6. The most
commonly used reinforcement fibres are
glass, carbon, basalt, or aramid fibres. It
is also possible to directly introduce additives such as mineral fillers, pigments
or flame retardants. With the new iPul
pultrusion machines, both linear profiles
with complex cross-sections and 2D or
3D curved profiles can be manufactured
using the patented radius pultrusion process. KraussMaffei is working closely with
Thomas Technik, the inventor of radius
pultrusion and an experienced supplier of pultrusion machines that perfectly
complement KraussMaffei's metering machines.
Perfect for wind energy and construction
Pultruded profiles are characterized by
their high fibre volume content, and thus
high strength and low weight, making
them suitable for use in the construction
and wind power industries. Using the example of three selected applications, and
in cooperation with partners from the
chemicals industry, KraussMaffei demonstrates the feasibility and advantages of
the new pultrusion machine. For example,
polyurethane-based profiles for large-format windows with simultaneously narrow
frames are the focus of the collaboration
with Covestro. Here, pultruded polyurethane profiles offer significantly higher mechanical characteristics than PVC
profiles. Their insulation properties are
excellent and their production is cost-effective, mainly in comparison to common
aluminium profiles. There is a huge future
market here, particularly in public buildings, offices and other institutions. The
second application example also comes
from the construction industry, where
KraussMaffei partners with Evonik for a
concrete project using epoxy resins and
glass fibres. The third application stems
from the wind energy sector, focusing on
the production of pultruded reinforcement elements for particularly large wind
turbine rotor blades. Together with its
partner Huntsman, the company is pushing the development of new epoxy materials and pultrusion equipment technology.
The aim is to develop epoxy resin systems
for carbon pultruded parts that will meet
the high-volume production needs of the
wind industry.
