presenting at JEC World 2017 in Paris its latest product development for model and mould construction in the field of composite
materials: Mikon® 399 MC. This innovative easy-to-handle sealer for
porous tooling boards, which is available in colourless or black versions,
guarantees high process reliability and best quality. At the same time, the
material consumption is very low and the application effort is reduced to a

Coats Synergex - composite
technology revolutionized
The need to reduce weight is pertinent for the automotive industry
due to increasing awareness of the
financial and environmental cost of
energy. While metals are the traditional
construction materials used in that sector, thermoplastic-based composites
are a possible solution due to their lower weight while still providing the
required strength. Coats' new advanced capability to produce thermoplastic-reinforced composite components utilises a 4-step process from fibre
to finished part while also reducing process material waste. Best known
as Tailor Fibre Placement (TFP), this technology uses the company's
Synergex advanced composite fibre and moves away from traditional
methods (prepreg/RTM). It provides value in two ways:
- Compared to more established methods, it eliminates the need for resin
application and autoclave heating, providing greater manufacturing efficiency and helping to reduce costs.
- Compared to existing technology, it helps eliminate material waste which
is reduced from 30%+ to less than 5%.
Working with a number of partners, Coats was able to produce the first-ever wheel arch for the Elemental Rp1 high-performance car. The project
achieved some 50% weight reduction compared to the original, with a cost
reduction of around 50%.
The market potential for this innovation is quite large, ranging from work
with mainstream automotive OEMs and Tier 1s as well as with the aerospace, leisure, water sports and winter sport markets.

Flexible UD tape production

A range of fibre and tape placement technologies for preforming already
exist, but the tape and tow materials available cannot be flexibly tailored
and optimized for the different processing steps. The manufacturer is dependent on the tapes available on the market. R&D and prototype developers in the field of composites need flexible and adaptable materials with constant quality. At JEC World, M&A Dieterle will demonstrate a highly flexible
and innovative method for the production of UD tape and fixed tow materials
on demand. Material properties such as fibre type, areal weight, binder or matrix content can be varied and are easily adaptable, while the material quality is
monitored. The UD tape material is produced within a minimum space of only
2 long by 1.50 m wide. The machine processes one roving at a time, enabling
fast material changes. This results in resource-efficient tape manufacturing and
tailored properties for optimized preform structuring. Little initial machine
investment is needed, and at the current tape cost, this investment can be redeemed within months. The first target markets are R&D departments that
wish to develop new composite materials and tailored preforms. Unique material combinations/properties and load path optimized preforming become
possible. During the JEC show, the company will demonstrate the method
used to validate the processing and handling of materials produced with various preforming and post-processing methods, such as TFP, deep drawing and
