With the collaborative economy on the
rise, collaborative projects in the composite sector are also becoming more
apparent as a key to success, or at least as
a prerequisite. With the help of competition - I mean competition with other
materials and not a pointless competition within our sector - the industry's
dynamic players are going collective.
How can anyone imagine that they, by
themselves, can solve complex problems
where design, matrices, reinforcements
and processes all play a major role?
Opening out (not to mention open
innovation) speeds up projects and gives
the participants a boost. Mutual benefits
ensue, including for other company
projects. The symposium organized by
French association of plastics engineers
SFIP and the welding institute IS on 8-9
June in Saint-Avold in eastern France
was a good example of this. During the
two days of excellent presentations,
every single talk concerned a project that
was sponsored by more than one organization, whatever the type of project. And
within this ecosystem, clusters and other
centres of competitive advantage are
given their due - which is quite normal,
since their role is to bring all sorts of
players together.

Projects abound and involve the full
range of players. Projects in Europe led
by CETIM (which celebrates its 50th
anniversary this year), AZL, TUM and
the IRT Jules Verne in Nantes are along
the same lines as the activities sponsored
by the IACMI in America, of which JEC
is a member, and KCTECH in Korea, or
the project undertaken in Brazil by the
Lightweight Structures Laboratory, two
hours away from Sao Paulo, and which
we talked about in JCM 105.
You'll get another example in the next
issue, about a project that has been a success story involving a real partnership of
players from the composite value chain,
including OEMs, Tier One manufacturers, assembly suppliers (fasteners and
adhesive), and chemists (materials).
We will make efforts even more than
before to promote collaborative projects.
They are intelligent and unifying, and
they help to further composite solutions.
But we aren't saying that individual
initiatives are without value and that we
won't talk about them any more! It's just
that they often carry less weight than a
project with multiple stakeholders.
