New carbon-fibre-reinforced composite for vehicle bodies and electric vehicles

s Europe’s market leader, Lamilux is the first manufacturer of fibre-reinforced composites to successfully manufacture carbon-fibre-reinforced polymers (CFRP) in a continuous flat-conveyor production process, producing sheet widths of up to 3.20 metres. Its ability to manufacture CFRP sheets and panels 1.0 to 5.0 millimetres thick at an “attractive” price, using large-scale industrial production methods, makes the German company unique in the world. The relationship between procurement costs and the high design-engineering value of CFRP in lightweight construction is particularly advantageous.

The matrix resin absorbs the applied forces and transfers them to the reinforcing highstrength carbon fibres. It is worth making a

comparison with other materials, such as those used as face sheeting in the walls of truck bodies. For example, CFRP face sheeting is 30 to 50% lighter than face sheeting made of steel or aluminium and its tensile strength is three to four times higher.

Continuous process
During the continuous production process – using Lamilux’s three highly automated production lines, each more than 100 metres in length – the carbon fibres can be worked into the material as a lattice or as plies with various areal weights and with uni-, bi-, trior multi-directional fibre orientations. The fibre orientation is selected to suit the individual application and stability requirements.
