The first one of these newgeneration long-distance airplanes will leave the plant during July; the first test flight is announced for the month of August, and the first delivery is set for May 2008. This tight schedule suggests that Boeing has surmounted the difficulties it was facing. Everyone is impatiently awaiting this airplane – and no one more than all you composite professionals, considering how substantial the contribution of composite materials has been to the project. That third week of March was certainly a full one, reserving us an out-of-theordinary batch of aviation news. China’s government confirmed their decision to launch out into civil aircraft construction, with the intention to put out a 100-passenger airplane in the near future. It is likely that few people were surprised by the announcement; China just recently sent a man into space. Hard to believe that the country wouldn’t want to transport its citizens around its own territory in its own airplanes, especially since China is one of the countries where air traffic has increased the most. Both Boeing and Airbus, moreover, have been very active in supplying aircraft for this market. The new Chinese airplane is called the AJR-21 (Advanced Regional Jet for the 21st century), and should make its first test flights in spring next year, announced the autorities. www.jeccomposites.com/magazine-subscription/ Fax: +33 (0)1 58 36 15 19 Tel: +33 (0)1 58 36 15 08 dumarquez@jeccomposites.com Unit price: 20 (8 issues a year) Patrice Sinthon, sinthon@jeccomposites.com ISSN 1639-965X - CPPAP: 1007 T 82488 Dépôt légal : 2e trimestre 2007 All rights reserved, unless mentioned. JEC Composites Magazine is published by JEC. All this leads to the conclusion that composite materials still have some very good prospects in the aviation industry. In particular, carbon fibre should benefit from it. After all, there is no reason these new Chinese aircraft would not make use of composite materials – these days, it would be hard to avoid it. Composites will certainly be on board, even if not in the same proportions as on the 787 Dreamliner or the future A350. If the announcements continue at this rate, the increases in production capacity recently advertised by carbon producers (see the yearly wrap-up in our 31st issue) won’t be enough to satisfy the appetites of all the aircraft manufacturers! 19, Bd de Courcelles 75008 Paris - France Tel: +33 (0)1 58 36 15 01 Fax: +33 (0)1 58 36 15 14 www.jeccomposites.com The reproduction, even partial, of articles and illustrations is forbidden, unless prior permission is obtained from JEC Composites Magazine.
