Forum A day in the working life of Suhird Kamra, an engineer by profession, works for the Royal Sundaram Alliance Insurance Company in Chennai, India, where he is Head of Corporate Marine & Casualty Underwriting. He attended the Advanced liability workshop organised by Swiss Re in October 2005. The job is diverse and that’s one thing I like about it. That said, as we concentrate on developing new commercial opportunities to grow our book, I do spend a lot of time visiting brokers around the regions. Then there’s the weekly monitoring of portfolio performance. I also work closely with the three underwriters in my head office as well as the regional underwriting managers and risk engineers. In addition, I deal with referrals on larger cases and commercial decisions. The latter entails deciding whether we should write business that, while not profitable now, could have potential later on, or be important for maintaining a client relationship. And sometimes we get quite exotic requests from clients like the one from a leading art gallery that wanted us to insure a risk connected with artworks. The idea was for investors to buy bonds or shares in pieces that the dealer would purchase from local masters.
