On fi eld applications
with composites
While aeronautics and automotive remain the most demanding application
sectors for composite materials when it comes to volumes, defence is
another area whose potential for advanced materials has continued to grow
precisely because of the market's very specifi c challenges. Decision-makers
are increasingly att racted by composite materials, and below we share a few
reasons that the scales tip in their favour.
First and foremost, support logistics are vital because without it, there is no
food, equipment, arms or munitions. Oft en considered the second-highest
expenditure for a military campaign or for the maintenance, repair and
operational availability (MRO) of armed forces. Here, the wide selection
of composite materials available is a major benefi t; development and design
are also easier as these materials facilitate complex shape production.
Composites therefore contribute to both reducing the number of parts to
be assembled in order to create a fi nished product and the number of references
that must be available for maintenance, particularly in the case of
vehicles. Composite materials also permit the stress forces that a part will
have to endure to be distributed in the most optimal way, thus contributing
to improvements in effi ciency. Furthermore, material implementation in
the production of a fi nished product can be controlled very precisely. Th is
constitutes a fi nancial argument that is not a trivial one, when considering
the colossal budgets allocated to defence worldwide. Finally, the ability of
nano composites to push the boundaries of ballistic resistance in certain
outer shells and other mobile shielding elements is to be noted.
Next, during fi eld operations, composite materials with equivalent performances
to conventional materials off er substantial weight savings. On
mission, tactical mobility is paramount. Composite materials play a part
in supporting mobility in vehicles by optimising fuel consumption, in particular
by reducing their overall weight. Likewise, infantry corps also benefi
t from lightweighting with the highly-eff ective protective body armour
now at their disposal. Less of a hindrance as corps members move about,
they are also resistant to bullets, shocks and light impacts. Lastly, this advantage
also has a positive impact on the availability of replacement parts
during fi eld ops, as these parts are easier to transport and less costly.
An interesting fact that makes composite materials more appealing in the
fi eld is linked to the rapid development of additive manufacturing, and
specifi cally, 3D printing. 3D printer performance and their potential uses
continue to advance. Easy to deploy on remote bases, these printers are
appropriate for producing composite material parts quickly, in small print
runs, eliminating dependence on an industrial production facility located
far away. Th is is yet another major strategic advantage off ered by composite
materials in times of peace and times of war.
Th e benefi ts listed above are far from exhaustive. Th e ability of carbon reinforcements
to reduce thermal and acoustic signatures in applications like
rotor or propulsive turbine blades, for example, could also be examined.

is used not only by the
army, but also by sea-going
armed forces. Th e project
carried out by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)
is a prime example. ORNL partnered with the US Navy's Disruptive
Technology Lab to create a submarine hull printed using
3D technologies, the fi rst of its kind in military history. By
using ORNL's FDM Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM)
technology, the team produced a 39-metre-long conceptual hull
composed of six carbon fi bre composite modules. Th e hull was
fabricated quickly and at lower cost than if traditional manufacturing
methods had been used. While still in trial phases, all signs
point to other 3D-printed submarines testing the water soon.

reinforced steel
chain links, technical
fabrics integrated into a
moulded polymer layer,
and a backer made out of composite stiff eners. Composite
materials represent around 22% of the total mass of materials
used and off er many operational benefi ts. For example, their
resistance contributes to a longer equipment life span while
reducing weight, noise, and working temperature.
