Driving weight savings in underbody battery
protection
Huntsman has developed a polyurethane-based technology which can be used
to produce rigid foam cores for composite sandwich structures that can reduce
weight in underbody battery protection applications in electric vehicles (EVs).
RIMLINE®
FC systems, combined with compatible fiber-reinforced resins,
can enable significant weight savings compared to existing materials such
as steel and aluminium - without compromising other physical performance
properties needed in this important application area.
A
s the drive to get more EVs on
the road accelerates, automotive
manufacturers are looking for
new ways to decrease the weight of their
cars. Over the last few decades, significant
weight savings have been achieved
across most areas of vehicle design.
Underbody battery protection is one area
where additional weight savings can
be made. Historically, the industry has
defaulted to using heavy or expensive
metals. The introduction of Huntsman's
RIMLINE®
FC polyurethane systems
enables that change.
can have high stiffness and strength and can
offer good thermal insulation.
The versatility of this technology also enables
automated and flexible manufacturing
conditions and opens up greater design
freedom. Adhering well to epoxy and
polyurethane composite resins and metals,
and capable of resisting pressure in
composite molding, RIMLINE®
FC systems
make it possible to produce molded PU
cores in complex shapes with few limitations
on size, density or thickness. Molded into
shape, RIMLINE®
FC systems can be used
with glass or carbon reinforcements to
build a preform. Following impregnation -
through resin transfer molding (RTM) with
VITROX®
composite resins for example or
through wet compression molding (WCM)
with RIMLINE®
composite resins - the final
sandwich composite can be constructed.
RIMLINE®
FC systems can also simplify
production, thanks to a fast cure time and
low tool cleaning needs, the systems can be
used in net shape molding to produce panels
at a high rate - boosting plant productivity.

The light weighting of vehicles has come a long way, but the automotive industry needs to make additional
weight savings. Using RIMLINE®
FC systems in underbody battery protection could prove part of the solution -
accelerating the drive to create lighter EVs that can go further between charges.
However, more work is required -
particularly on EVs which are typically
heavier than petrol or diesel-powered
alternatives*.
* The average powertrain of a full battery EV (with a
35.8kWh battery pack and a 100kw electric motor)
is around 125% heavier than that of a vehicle with a
standard internal combustion engine.
