repeatability of the material transformation
process and the related CO2 management.

New high-strength composite panels
from EoL wind blades and auto parts
Among other applications, the Infinici
process allows for the production of highly
homogeneous single-layer or multi-layer
(2-5 layers) composite panels. The panels
can be manufactured in various thicknesses

(3-38 mm) and standard bulk density ranges
(800-1,250 kg/m3), depending on the end
application. A three-layer board structure
already offers a wide spectrum of surface
qualities (rough, structured to smooth).
The core layer, as the backbone, ensures
high strength and the surface compositions
provide for a strong modulus of elasticity
(MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR).
The internal bond (IB) can be influenced
by modifying the density and the binder
content. The Infinici product development
incorporates engineering know-how and
material compression processes from conventional panel production. The resulting
composite panels are far superior technically
to the current wood (PB, MDF, HDF or
plywood) and wood-cement boards in the
market. Compared to composite boards
made of virgin raw materials, these panels are
less expensive to produce.
The company plans a steady expansion of its
technology and has the potential to set standards and open up new market segments.
For the core markets, it offers technology
licenses and plans to establish production
capacity of up to 100,000 tons per year in
Europe together with industrial partners and
investors.

The Infinici Technology
The basic principle of the Infinici technology
is relatively simple: "Old" (EoL) composites
are (to a high degree) mechanically broken
down into their base materials. Metals,
foreign substances and contamination
are separated. The separated, shortened
and classified old glass fibres, PUR fillers
and powderized resins are individually
treated with new resins, (depending on the
application, additional virgin-fibers and/
or PUR materials can also be added). After
resinating, the moisture content is controlled
to a constant level and the material streams
are formed, layered and compacted to create
new composites, predominantly in the form
of high-strength panel materials.
The Infinici technology is based on a dry,
completely self-contained process. The first
phase consists of several successive mechanical size reduction stations, with shearing,
cutting and hammer mills, oscillating
screens, roller-disc screen stations, gravity
separation and several metal removal stations, to remove separately all ferrous and all
non-ferrous metals, via inline eddy-current
separators and an array of magnet stations.
Even the deposits of lead balancing weights,

which are still found in older generations of
rotor blades, are reliably filtered out.
Repeated regrinding, further classification
and gravity separation enable the highest
possible degree of material separation and
removal of any foreign objects. During these
process steps, the highest possible degree
of detachment of glass strands, PUR fillers
and thermosetting polymer (epoxy) resins is
achieved, which segregate from the fibres in a
fine, granulated form.
In the second phase, the previously separated
fibres and fines are brought together again
in an adjustable, menu-driven ratio. The
fibres and fines are then treated in separate
stations with a special MDI binder (based
on 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate with
highly functional oligomers and isomers).
The precisely resinated materials are then
transformed (moulded and pressed) into
new, high-strength composite products. The
binder and basic components of the raw
materials ensure water resistance of the end
products. No harmful outgassing occurs after
curing.
