Healable composites to improve circularity

The European Technology Platform for
Sustainable Chemistry wrote a report [6] that
includes a lifecycle analysis of circular economy models for composite products. They
specifically state that circular economy models
including the reuse, repair, refurbishment and
recovery of parts have the potential to reduce
composite resource needs by 50%. This
statement is fully in line with the products the
company is providing to the market. Indeed,
CompPair composites also demonstrated efficient end-of-life management. This evaluation
was performed at the lab-scale and still needs
to be validated for further service implementa-

tion. The aeronautical industry is at a turning
point in its history, with requirements to build
planes with more durable materials.
In the future, CompPair will use its innovative
technology to develop product families
meeting the aerospace industry specifications
and offer innovative solutions for aircraft and
space applications.
Following the United Nation Sustainable
Development Goals (SDG), companies will
have to comply with future sustainability and
recyclability regulations. The lifetime and
end-of-life management principles applied
by CompPair contribute to SDG 12 on
Responsible Consumption and Production,
and SDG 13 for Climate Action.
A highly versatile technology
CompPair conducted market studies to
understand the challenges and trends in the
composites industry, but also to define an
efficient go-to-market strategy. The company
entered the market in early 2020 with an
industrialized product, currently used in
applications manufactured with prepreg
semi-products at 140°C and standard industry
tooling. Manufacturers looking for innovative
materials matching the current performance
and quality requirements while being cost-efficient and sustainable will therefore find what
they wish for in CompPair products.
The company will continue to broaden
its portfolio to cover the highest range of
applications in the composites industry and
develop new product families with lower curing temperatures and shorter cycles. Meeting
at best the sports and marine segments' needs
for now, CompPair aims to further tackle
these issues in the wind energy, aerospace and
automotive markets.

applications by providing in-situ damage
repair and thus increasing the number of
possible healing cycles. Fatigue tests were
conducted on these healable composites: they
were damaged and healed over ten cycles in
comparison to standard composites which
broke after two cycles [5].
CompPair's innovation is also shaping the new
generation of sandwich structures. Indeed,
these prepregs can also be used to manufacture sandwich parts, especially for marine and
sports applications, which can be subjected
to delamination during their manufacturing
process and experience many damage events
all along their transportation and usage.
To demonstrate these advantages, the
company built a surfboard and a catamaran
daggerboard with the new technology (Figure
4). These unique healable applications were
then tested on the water by professionals
who approved their quality and performance.
CompPair makes it possible to build durable
applications, capturing a new wave of end-users that are sensitive to eco-designed goods
with a 360° solution.

The Swiss company is now taking part in the
ESABIC CH programme to validate the healable solution for space-grade specifications
and to broaden its product portfolio. With
this innovative system, space manufacturers
could overcome repair issues due to damage,
potentially also arising during a mission.
The goal is to have a clear confirmation that
CompPair products are of interest for the
space industry.
By addressing the challenges of perishable
products and global composites waste,
CompPair Technologies has the vision
to bring full circularity to the composites market.
