Healable composites to improve circularity

There is thus a new set of urgent needs regarding the circularity of composite materials.
The composites industry needs solutions to
facilitate the repair process and to build more
durable applications, aligned with the United
Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
However, the barriers to entry are high for new
technologies and manufacturers are looking
for innovative solutions without changing
neither their conventional manufacturing
laminating and curing processes, nor the
quality and performance of their products.
In this context, CompPair offers innovative
preimpregnated textiles that answer most of
the above-mentioned issues for the first time,
providing a 360° solution to the composites
market (Figure 1). Indeed, the Swiss company
provides smart and sustainable material solutions for in-situ damage healing of composite
structures to extend their lifetime and improve
their end-of-life management.
This solution is the result of more than 12
years of research on self-healing composites in the Laboratory for Processing of
Advanced Composites (LPAC) at the Ecole
Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL),
and especially by Dr Amaël Cohades's thesis
under the supervision of Prof. Véronique
Michaud.
CompPair's unique approach enabled the
creation of a semi-autonomous heat-triggered
system, overcoming the challenges faced by
fully-autonomous systems [4] in terms of
mechanical properties. More specifically,
CompPair's strategy focused on a semi-au-

tonomous healing matrix system triggered by
moderate heat (using a 80-150°C heat gun),
which proved to be the right compromise
to meet the composites market's needs.
Composite materials made from this semi-autonomous system can now be produced on
a large scale thanks to the company's preimpregnated textiles, competing directly with
conventional composite systems.
Process compatibility for
viable composite solutions
From the beginning of their research to the
industrialisation stage, the team members'
goal was to provide compatible solutions
in terms of manufacturing process while
reaching competitive mechanical properties
for composite structures.
The first product family CompPair is bringing
on the market is a series of preimpregnated
textiles made of standard carbon and glass
fibres (Figure 2), both UD and twill. Their
strategy is to penetrate the market with

omposites have an intrinsic limitation
during their lifetime: their damage sensitivity. They are brittle, due to the resin
properties, leading to the development and
fast propagation of micro-cracks. Composite
applications can be subjected to such damage
events during their entire life, from manufacturing and handling to consumer use. When
they are critical, these damage events need to
be repaired using processes such as the traditional patch repair method [1], which remain
cumbersome. Indeed, such processes are costly and time-consuming, and the yearly budget
for composites repair operations is expected
to reach 22 billion dollars worldwide by 2026
[2]. The composites market is also facing a
crucial end-of-life management challenge as
broken parts that could not be repaired are
often abandoned in landfills due to a lack of
efficient recycling processes, resulting in a
projection of composites waste reaching up to
110 million tons in 2050 [3].
The current trends of the composites market
remain centred on lightweight and high
strength requirements; however, there is
also a high demand for sustainable materials,
arising from the end-users asking for more
eco-designed goods.
The lack of innovative solutions, within the
material itself, to overcome this sustainability
issue will become even more of an issue with
the emergence of new laws and demands.

Composite structures are facing challenges regarding damage
sensitivity, maintenance costs and sustainability. Inspired by
nature, CompPair offers innovative preimpregnated textiles to
build full composite parts with intrinsic healing functionalities,
thus bringing down maintenance costs.
