Electrostatic discharge polymer nanocomposite for 3d
printing
Polymer nanocomposites is a multifunctional material that exploits the
unique properties of specific nanoparticles and can be tailored to a target
application. We have been able to develop a cost effective, structural thermoplastic nanocomposite that is ideal for 3D printing via fused deposition
modelling (FDM). This was achieved by employing the intrinsic nature of
conductive fillers to create a network structure in the thermoplastic matrix via an optimized twin screw compounding technology. The materials
characterization investigated were mechanical testing using material testing
system (MTS), thermal analysis using simultaneous DSC/TGA Analyzer
(SDT) and Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA) and electrical resistivity
measurement using linear 4-point probe. The performance evaluation of the
nanocomposite exhibits combination of good mechanical properties, electrical properties, and thermal stability, making the polymer nanocomposites
filaments viable for manufacturing static discharge products in ESD applications.

Stiffness degradation model for fatigue life prediction
The fatigue damage mechanism of composites is highly complex and may
be in one or more forms such as matrix cracking, delamination, fibre/
matrix debonding and fibre breakage. Damage during fatigue is reflected
in strength, stiffness, and fatigue life reduction. Different damage mechanisms like matrix cracking and delamination reduce stored energy, which
in turn reduces the stiffness. There is always a correlation between damage and stiffness reduction. Thus, stiffness reduction is the only parameter
that can be monitored to evaluate the useful life of the component.

The goal of this research is to develop a standard model of stiffness degradation in fibre reinforced composite systems that have higher toughness
and fatigue life with minimal reduction in mechanical strength. These
composites can be used to lighter and longer lasting ship hulls, wind turbine blades and other components that are subjected to cyclic loading.

6wt% nanosilica modification
showed 10 and 3 times improvement in fatigue life in high-cycle and
low-cycle fatigue, respectively.

Sustainable fibers derived from cellulose for use in polymer composite materials
Natural fibre reinforcement in polymer matrix composites come from plants that contain lignocellulose by nature. This research
primarily focuses ragweed fibre, (Ambrosia trifida) a natural fibre originated from bast such as jute, flax, or hemp. Natural fibre
reinforcement is ideal for low load bearing applications and one main inquiry is decreasing the relative high moisture absorption
property. Cellulose nanocomposites find application in many areas such as packaging, optoelectrical, barrier, electronics, biomedical, paper, textiles, military, etc. The main scientific inquiry to
explore in natural reinforcement composites stems from the hydrophilic nature of natural fibre reinforcement and the hydrophobic nature of the polymer matrix. In order to optimize mechanical
properties, the reinforcement and matrix must be properly treated. This research attempts to characterize Ragweed Fibre as viable candidate for the natural reinforcement composite industry.
