JEC Composites Magazine: This pandemic
changed the world in many aspects. Specifically, changes are to be expected in the aviation industry. What is your opinion about the
sector's future?

Linden Harris: During the last few
decades, the aeronautical industry has gone
from strength to strength, with little challenge. Passengers were reaping the benefits
of cheap, fair and abundant airline operator
choices. We, the manufacturers, had healthy
order books of many years ahead of us, and
the market forecast was rosy too.
Yes, we got the A380 wrong, but it is a truly
fantastic plane for the passengers. However,
operators wanted a smaller plane so this is
the current trend and, sadly, the end of the
A380.
Now let's look at the effect the Corona pandemic has had on this industry. Operators
are not flying, passengers do not want to fly,
online meetings are a good alternative. So
for us, operators do not want to buy aircraft
or receive them from us as they are not using
them and the demand is not there.
Operators and our suppliers are going bust,
our production rate is now cut by 30 to 40%.
We have to, and are, slimming down our operations. But to what extent? What demand
will there be from operators? What demand
from passengers will fuel this demand? Will
our suppliers still be in business? Can we
ramp up again immediately or will it take
time?
We are planning for a 12- to 18-month impact to our industry.
It is not clear if we will ever ramp back up
to the pre-Corona good times. So will our
industry remain smaller?
So many questions and uncertainty for our
future... If it forces us to remodel our business in order to survive, it will be years before the market for aircraft recovers.

After so many years designing larger planes
able to hold a lot of passengers, how can
the problem of too many people inside a
closed space without the required distance
between them be solved? How will the
industry ever ramp up to the pre-Corona
delivery rates?

L.H.: I imagine the question of moving
lots of people together is valid also for buses, trains, and tubes, which are often very
crowded, particularly during rush hours.
The question of redesign is equally applicable, but maybe even more relevant as the
number of travellers by tube in London,
for example, by far exceeds the number by
flight. But I see a bigger question for airlines,
that of profitability. It is the airlines that customize their cabins - yes, we assemble it, but
it is to their design. They need to maximize
the number of seats to be profitable or, with
a reduced number of seats, the cost to the
flying customer would need to be increased.
For example, if a seat from Toulouse to London currently costs 100 euros, with a 2m
social distancing applied, that seat would
cost the flying customer about 1600 euros.

I cannot see airlines staying in business for
long with such prices... Are masks the simple answer?
From a manufacturer's (and maybe selfish) point of view, it might be a good time
to focus on the future developments of the
aircraft industry to fully develop and probe
new technologies. Hopefully with a lot of
cash injected from the governments/EU.
"Mass production" strategies might very
likely be dismissed from the agenda in favour of digital design technologies, greener
supersonic aircraft, etc.
It is a very difficult moment; I think the industry should be totally re-considered and
kind of redesigned. It will be hard but surely
a big challenge for all the industry.
For sure, redesigning aircraft interiors is an
urgent necessity. How to distance passengers
while not too much reducing their number?
In order to be profitable, airlines need as
many seats as possible to be filled on every
flight. "Load factors" are particularly important for budget carriers, which typically fly
with more than 90% of seats occupied. But if
