First, the in-situ fibre strength that is realizable is increased. Since the
earliest models of unidirectional composite strength by Rosen and
colleagues in the 1960s, the role of the matrix modulus as a factor in
load transfer between fibres near an individual fibre break has been
recognized [13].
A higher matrix modulus tends to increase the observed strength
of a composite by increasing the "fibre delivered strength", which
is the in-situ fibre strength realized in the composite. Conventional
thermosetting resins have modulus values in a narrow range.
Nanoparticle modification increases the modulus enough to access
this aspect of the micromechanics of tensile failure [8]. Because of
the dependence of burst strength on hoop layers and the large volume of material at essentially uniform stress in those layers, pressure
vessels are a unique structure for taking advantage of the tensile performance of composites with nanoparticle-modified matrix resins.
Second, a higher matrix stiffness increases the ply transverse and
shear moduli. The effect is to increase load sharing by the non-hoop
layers in a composite overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV). In Type
IV COPVs that use a polymer liner or Type III COPVs having thin
metal liners, the increase in hoop stiffness due to non-hoop plies can
be significant, though small. It was demonstrated that the fatigue life
of a COPV with an aluminium liner can be increased by substituting
nanoparticle-modified matrix resins into a given design [8]. Since
vessel failure is due to the initiation and growth of a crack through
the thickness of the aluminium liner, it can be inferred that the re-

duced hoop strain range experienced by the liner is responsible. The
impact of increased ply transverse and shear moduli on COPV performance appears to be design-dependent.
A detailed stress analysis with measured composite material properties should be sufficient to indicate the magnitude of the impact to be
expected for a given design.
Based on these two effects, nanoparticle-modified matrix resins present the opportunity to optimize the design of compressed natural gas
and hydrogen tanks. The result would be a lower tank weight and/
or increased volume for a fixed external form factor, lower fibre and
resin content, lower cost, and possibly increased durability.
A study was undertaken to investigate the effect of nanocalcite matrix modification on COPVs [14]. An epoxy nanocomposite matrix
resin, MR 8831 was investigated at a nanocalcite loading level of 35%
by weight. Type III (i.e., aluminium liner) COPVs with a 7.5-litre
capacity were prepared via filament winding and evaluated for improvements in initial burst pressure, burst pressure after impact damage, and vessel fatigue life.

The incorporation of nanocalcite at 35 wt% in the matrix resin resulted in Type III pressure vessels demonstrating a 4.4 to 18% increase
in virgin burst pressure (Table 6). Figure 7 shows the appearance of
