ICONIC: Improving the crashworthiness
of composite transportation structures
The drive towards reducing the environmental footprint of the transportation sector has provided the impetus for the utilization of lightweight
materials in transportation vehicles. The dramatic increase in the use of
composites in the primary structure of the latest generation passenger
aircraft is a prominent example, and the automotive and rail industries
are, likewise, exploring the increased adoption of advanced lightweight
composite materials. A key challenge that these industries have identified is ensuring that such structures offer a high level of occupant safety
in crash events.
ICONIC is a €4M, four-year (2016-2020) project funded through the
EU H2020 research and innovation programme. It is coordinated by
Queen's University Belfast (UK) and involves nine beneficiaries and
seven partner organisations from six different countries across Europe.
The central aim of ICONIC is to develop a critical mass of research and
engineering leaders, with a world-leading capability in the design of
lightweight aeronautical, automotive and rail transportation composite
structures with superior crashworthiness. These challenges are addressed
by bringing together 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) in an innovative, multiscale and multidisciplinary research and skills development
programme that goes beyond the state-of-the-art. Each ESR is pursuing
a research project leading to the award of a PhD. These projects are distributed across four work packages; (i) Material development and characterization; (ii) Numerical modelling of impact and crush; (iii) Joint
design for energy absorption; (iv) Structural design and optimization

MACANTA: Multifunctional hierarchical advanced composite aerostructures utilizing the combined properties of different carbon
nanotube assemblies
The advent of carbon-fibre composite passenger aircraft has
been primarily driven by the need to reduce structural weight.
Higher operating efficiencies per revenue passenger kilometre
also contribute to a reduction in environmental impact where
1 kg of fuel saved equates to a reduction of 3.15 kg of carbon
dioxide emissions.
The high specific strength and stiffness, and corrosion and fatigue resistance of carbon-fibre composite materials, make them
highly suitable for lightweight aerostructures. In laminated
form, the material's relatively low through-thickness strength
and fracture toughness tempers these superior properties and
makes composite structures susceptible to impact damage.
Carbon-fibre composites have low electrical conductivity which
necessitates additional measures to ensure adequate lightning
strike protection. The industry has adopted the use of a fine
metallic mesh incorporated into the aerodynamic surfaces. This
approach adds parasitic weight to the structure as well as increasing manufacture and maintenance complexity. Composite
materials also have low thermal conductivity which impacts on
the design of anti-icing systems.
MACANTA is a £1M project funded by the EPSRC and brings
together a research team with highly complementary expertise
to increase the fundamental understanding of the influence of
physical and chemical characteristics of different carbon nanotube (CNT) assemblies. The goal is to develop multifunctional
composites which mitigate the described shortcomings as well
as providing additional functionality (www.macantaproject.

Equipment and Facilities
The Advanced Composites Research Group has a well-equipped laboratory
which includes a suite of static and fatigue tension/ compression universal
testing machines; a high temperature/ high pressure research autoclave;
melt processing, extrusion and resin infusion facilities; a Chemical Vapour
Deposition (CVD) system for producing high specification CNTs; a gas
phase functionalisation furnace; instruments for fabrication, testing and
analysis including a portable ultrasonic NDT inspection device, atmospheric plasma surface treatment and microplasma systems, SEM, FTIR
Spectrometer, UV-VIS Spectrometer, DSC, DMA, centrifuge, high precision digital thermometers and multimeters, a FLIR thermal imaging camera, Markforged 3D composite printers, lab-scale three-axis CNC milling
machines. The group also has ready access to Linux and Windows based
high performance computing, in-house and commercial finite element software, and state-of-the-art TEM.

An insight into the Advanced Composites Research Group laboratory

Professor Falzon joined Queen's University Belfast in 2013, as the Royal Academy of Engineering-Bombardier Chair in Aerospace
Composites, where he estabished the Advanced Composites Research Group. He is currently Head of the School of Mechanical and
Aerospace Engineering and was previously the Foundation Chair in Aerospace Engineering at Monash University in Melbourne,
Australia, between 2008 and 2012. Between 1996 and 2008 Professor Falzon held various appointments at Imperial College London.
He is internationally renowned for his work on the computational analysis, design, manufacture and testing of advanced composite aerostructures. He has published close to 200 journal/conference papers and book chapters and in 2008 was awarded the George Taylor
Prize by the Royal Aeronautical Society for the best paper published in 2007 in the design, construction, production and fabrication
of aircraft structures. In 2009 he was honoured with an Australian Leadership Award, in recognition of his contribution to issues of
national importance and demonstrated leadership in his field, and in 2018 Prof Falzon was named Belfast Ambassador of the Year by
Visit Belfast in recognition of his efforts in promoting the city through winning the bid to host ICCM23. He is a Chartered Engineer, a
member of a number of professional organisations and scientific committees, and sits on the Editorial Board of three journals.
